Food allergy reaction?

Thursday morning, DS and I went out for breakfast. DS had some pancakes with nothing on them and some cantaloupe. He also had some bananas from my bananas foster pancakes. About 10 minutes after he started eating I noticed his right hand knuckles and his thumb had swelled up. Soon I could see hives forming on both hands and on his cheeks and around his mouth. He also had a few small hives on his right forearm. I gave him a small dose of Benadryl and his skin cleared up quickly.

Friday morning he woke up with a diaper blowout. The consistecy wasnt anything alarming and so I figured it was just a fluke. He had two more blowouts throughout the day. This morning he had another blowout and has had diarrhea several times already.

I thought that the hives were the result of a food allergy, maybe to something in the bananas foster topping. But could the diarrhea be a part of a food allergy reaction as well, not starting until almost 24 hours after the hives and continuing for 2 days?

Re: Food allergy reaction?

  • Food usually takes a day or so to work through, so it makes sense that it would be delayed from the hives. Also, since an allergic reaction is basically an immune response, it can last for several days until their system calms down. Were any of the foods new?

  • Thanks ladies. None of the foods themselves were new, that's why I'm thinking it might be an allergy to something that was in the sauce that the bananas had on them. I know though that allergies can develop to things that were previously OK, but I don't think that's the case.

I've had him on the BRAT diet all day today and the diarrhea consistency seems to be getting better. Hopefully he'll have a good night and will wake up dry tomorrow morning. He's got a terrible painful rash from all of the diarrhea that I know won't get much better until this has passed, despite loads and loads of cream and oatmeal baths :(
