Disinfecting toys

Hi ladies!
Does anyone have any good tips for natural disinfecting techniques for toys? I'm nervous to use bleach since they go in her mouth. Also, how often do you disinfect? Seems like everything is constantly on the ground, in her mouth, or covered in drool. Thanks!

  • I haven't yet. Which I know is probably bad.

  • We just wash stuff with soapy water.
  • Soapy water, unless we're out and about, then I use pacifier wipes.

  • Better Life products are the best! They have a sani spray and dish soap that I use for hard plastic toys (no dishwasher here...unless you count my hands) and stuffed animals go in the machine most of the time. Drool + dog hair from the floor = trip to the washing machine. I use delicate Cycle and lingerie bags.
  • @carolynl8 I'm really liking the products I've purchased! Its nice to be able to clean with J around (or at least in sight!) and not worry about him inhaling the chemicals. I really want the nursery spray. Im definitely a dork who is excited about cleaning products :) Enjoy them!

7th generation makes a disinfect spray. You don't even have to wipe off.

    This. They also have wipes

  • How do you wash your wooden toys? I'm assuming they are sealed, so they won't absorb water, but I wouldn't think you can submerge them.
  • We wash most everything in the washing machine or dishwasher. Wooden toys can be submerged briefly in hot soapy water and come out just fine.

We generally one wash super well when we buy used, when it has been puked on, or when it gets dropped in public or in our bathroom. We don't clean after colds and such.
  • The only time I ever disinfect is when I first buy something or when there is a virus in the house. Then I use seventh generation disinfecting wipes. They are safe for eating surfaces so they are safe for the baby. Other than that I will just use soap and water each night to wash Sophie giraffe and other toys he puts in his mouth.

  • Thank you, ladies!! I go the soap and water route, but I will look for those wipes and sprays.
  • The pacifier wipes we have can also be used to clean toys. I use those when we are out and she drops a toy on the floor of a restaurant for example.

Soft toys I throw in the washing machine/dryer when they get gross.
  • So if LO is sick- at what point do you sterilize/ clean the toys? Before they are well? After they are well? Every couple of days? Ben has RSV and I've been wondering about this...

Been wondering this too. My mom told me everyday until she's better. I don't have time for that lol.
    Everyday?! ... I'm with you.

  • I haven't sanitized a toy in 3.5 years.  No, that's a lie.  I used Lysol wipes on stuff that had been in the basement and I've put stuffed things through the washing machine.  But as for daily stuff that drops on the ground?  That gets a wipe down with a wet rag at best and probably only if it's sticky or visibly dirty :)
