3rd Trimester

PUPPP is not annoying!

I'm so sick of reading everywhere that PUPPP is an "annoying" condition with no detriment to the mother or fetus.

A fly buzzing around your head is annoying.  Someone interrupting you is annoying.  PUPPP is so painful it's debilitating.  Every night I sit in bathtubs full of ice crying my eyes out.  My DH can't stand to see me in this much pain.  My whole body is scarred and bloody from the itching, I can't breathe at night, I hyperventilate, I can't sleep at all and finally have to completely knock myself out with benadryl crying myself to sleep.  I wake up in the mornings a bloody zombie, having scratched all night while I sleep.

I dont want to take prednisone because it's not good for my baby and has horrible side effects.  I joined a Yahoo group for PUPPP which is great, but have found that most people say the prednisone is really awful, it works only temporarily, can cause Cushings or Addisons disease--weight gain, purple stretch marks, mania, swelling, tons of other side effects--and is untested on pregnant women so who knows what it's doing to my baby.

I'm only 34 weeks.  I really don't know how I can make it another 3, nevermind 6.  At least the Yahoo girls understand, many have to go to therapy because they basically lose their minds it's so bad.  I'm borderline there already.  Mine is a severe case too.

I go to the doctor in an hour, I don't know how I'll even make it till then.

"Annoying"?  "No detriment to the mother or fetus"?  Those must have been written by men.  Really, really stupid men.

  • I am so sorry! ?My sister had it with her first pregnancy and she has psoriasis. ?None of us could truly understand how uncomfortable she was. ?Hope you get some relief soon!

  • Tell your doctor to induce labor asap.  I would refuse to leave his office until it is agreed upon.  I have never had PUPPP but I have learned so much about it during my OB rotation.  Screw that.  I wouldn't put up with it.  Your baby will be fine delivered at this time.
  • Hi, I had PUPPPS durning the same time when I was pregnant so I understand exactly what you're going through.  I always tell people that I wouldn't wish PUPPPS on my worst enemy, that's how bad it is.  My doctor prescribed me a very low dose of cortisone cream which i used sparingly.  BUT what really worked for me was this website

     https://www.rainiersoapworks.com/puppp_relief.htm

I bought two of these soap bars and it worked wonders within a few days.  I had them overnight it.  TRUST ME.  It was the only thing that brought me some type of relief.  And when you do use it, grab a wash cloth and just scrub and scrub.  I had little blisters everywhere and doing this burst them and allowed them to dry out.  Bathe in this stuff as many times as you want.

  • I agree with you 100%!  It was the most horrible thing I have ever been through and would never wish it on my worst enemy.  People just think it is a rash and no big deal but I sat in cold baths the last week just crying it was so bad.  Nothing they gave me helped.  It just got worse and worse.

I was already getting a sceduled c-section from DS being breech but they pushed it up a week more because I couldn't take it anymore.  I didn't sleep for 72 hours before having DS.  unforunately for me the itch did not go away right after delivery.  I suffered with it for 2 months after birth. :(

I hope they induce you sooner than 40 weeks and it goes away for you quickly.

  • I am so glad you posted this. 5 weeks ago I woke up one morning with a SEVERE painful rash on the top of my vagina beginning where the pubic hair starts and stopping above where my labia are. So I went to the Dr. thinking I contracted some sort of STD from a toilet seat (since we hadn't had sex in 2 1/2 months) and he diagnosed me with SHINGLES. He prescribed me Valtrex which I took for a month. I took them for the full 30 days and the pain went away but I was still itching. I tried to deal with it for about 3 weeks but called in the refill to Valtrex Sunday and started taking them again. The rash has completely went away where it was originally but has since moved to my panty line. It feels different than shingles since the shingles were painful from the outside in and these are more itchy AND painful but feel like it is not coming from the inside nerves like shingles.  I'm wondering if I might have developed PUPPP since getting rid of the shingles and I'm mistaking one for the other! What do you think, those of you who have PUPPP, where do you have it?

    TIA

  • TheMrs mine started under my belly button, like right above my panty line.  Then it spread to my hips (I had stretch marks in both places, and PUPPP usually starts in stretch marks).  It has since traveled to my butt, my arms, my feet, my toes, my palms, and my fingers.  Also behind my knees.  Most people who have it don't get it in their palms.  I'm one of the lucky ones.  Stick out tongue
  • OMG that sounds absolutely miserable. I am so sorry you are having to deal with that on top of all the other side effects of pregnancy! It sounds like i might just have shingles again since i don't have the rash in my stretch marks (which i have ALOT of). Since dealing with shingles I think I would def go with induction on your current dilemma; I know PUPPP is not the same thing but I know what it is to be completely miserable with something that you cannot find relief for.

  • Stick with it. I know its hard but I think it best prepared me for labor and delivery, I would pick labor any day, every day! Baby needs every moment in your belly to grow and develop , I went with midwife and she said ya know if you can't hang in there we can induce but it's something I really wanted to avoid and trust me the pupps is something I would never wish on my worst enemy but there are worse things that can happen, My husband has put in my head its not pain its just "uncomfortable" and sure enough just think it will pass, it will pass, I know easier said then done. My first baby I got PUPPS for the last 8 weeks of pregnancy and it still took a month or so to clear after birth but this time around I got it at 13 weeks and its almost a milder version, the first time my whole body except my face, inside of hands and bottoms of feet were covered in the itchy rash, but this time at least SO FAR... its contained to my belly, i'm feeling it on my legs already but i'm trying to control touching it to try to keep it from spreading. I am using BIO OIL this time and it seems to be helping heal the scabbing skin and bleeding that has occurred. ughhh PUPPS is terrible but a healthy baby is all you gotta focus your mind on, and if we have to go through this terrible itch but in return recieve a healthy child, be positive, :) embrace it and use it for when the time comes to push that little one out and remember its ALL WORTH IT:)
  • I have it too @seastar430, And it keeps progressively getting worse..I take reactine which feels like it doesn't do anything, I take oatmeal baths right before bed (grind up oatmeal and throw it In Your lukewarm/cool bath and just sit In it...I use ice packs for me feet cause that is where it bugs me the most. And I use my beta deem prescription which is a stronger cortisone cream/gel for my itchy spots. thing is I can't cover my whole body In That but it did work on my tummy..now I'm just itchy everywhere else!!! Oh and yup, palms of my hands and fingers too. It is completely unbearable..so I understand 100% what you are going through. I looked for that pine tar soap and several health stores here and can't find it anywhere :(. I'm In Alberta, not sure if maybe it can't be shipped here?
  • I think you can just get pinetar soap at the pharmacy and supermarket? Sorry ladies, it sounds horrible!
  • I wouldn't wish this on anyone. I was just diagnosed with it on my 31 week appointment. I wear uniforms to work which do not help the situation. The most irritating comment is "Well, at least it's temporary." For those who don't suffer from PUPPP, they have no idea how debilitating it can be. I just ordered the pine tar soap and praying for a miracle.
