Getaway recommendations

My SO and I are planning a get away for a week in January. My mom will be flying down to watch Alex for us. Since we aren't married yet we haven't had a honeymoon and in the past 4 years we've been together, have only gone to Mexico once. Tell me a place where you have been and what you loved about it? We are open to all suggestions! He was wanting to go to Fiji but I know traveling there in itselfs round trip can take a few days. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance :)

Re: Getaway recommendations

  • Where are you located? H and I love Hawaii, but that can be a super long flight, depending on where you live. Other (close) places we've been that we've enjoyed are the Caribbean (Grand Cayman, St. John, etc.), Greece and Italy. Depending on where you're going you can probably score a deal since it's so close!

We are in Florida! Several people have recommended Hawaii to us. Which part of Hawaii do y'all visit? I guess if it comes down to it, we could add in some days for travel :)
  • If you're in FL any if the Caribbean islands should be pretty accessible. Also, I know a lot of cruises leave from there; they are a great opportunity to visit several places! Plus when you do a cruise, food and lodging is included in the price

  • Hawaii is gorgeous! You would love it. We usually are in Maui and Kauai the times we have been. The trip is well worth it. Punta Cana, Dominican is nice as well. And usually cheaper to got there as well. But it is still a great trip. Beautiful there.

  • I second the recommendation for Hawaii -- I've been to Maui, and it is beautiful.  Also Grand Cayman, as somebody suggested above. I was in Cabo San Lucas a million years ago, before it was a vacation hot spot, and that was great too!  And yes, Italy if you can swing it (ChicagoBroad and I are of one mind on this topic, apparently).

  • Thank you ladies! I am leaning more towards the Caribbean type of weather--and beaches. I've always wanted to visit Hawaii and I've never been on a cruise. But then I'm thinking/wondering how the weather would be during January?
  • St Martin is wonderful (French side of the island) and has great food.  St Lucia was also great.  DH and I went to Costa Rica on our honey moon if you are looking for an awesome location that is more adventure driven (zip lines etc).  We went to the Dominican Republic but didn't love it.  We liked Mexico better.

I was going to say Hawaii, too. It's amazing, and you can even see the whales in January I think!

ETA: We went tio the Big Island and it was awesome. There is beach, rainforest, lava rock... lots to see! It's pretty warm year-round.

  • I second Cabo! They have a really nice all-inclusive resort down there called the Pueblo Bonito Pacifica that we loved!

  • Ooh, you make me want to get away too! Hawaii is amazing and a great suggestion - I've stayed on all the islands except Molokai and my favorites are Lanai and Kauai (north shore/Hanalei). Caneel Bay on St. John is also one of my very favorite places.

  • You ladies are awesome, thank you! At first I was having a hard time deciding if I wanted to go because let's face it--it hard to leave our kids behind! However, we really need this time together and after all these fun, exciting suggestions I am ready to book the trip :) I will let you know what we pick! Thanks again
