April 2013 Moms

STM+ questions...

What time do your kids go to bed and who goes first? Does your LO ever wake up his/her older siblings or vice versa?

DD is still in my room and I want to move her into her own room but she will be right next to her big brother's room and our walls are thin. Just wanted to hear what works for other moms.

Re: STM+ questions...

  • I'm not much help. DH puts DS1 to bed, and I nurse the baby. They both usually go down around 7:30. And Casey is still in our bed. I didn't bedshare at all with Cameron so this is a whole different experience. But Cameron naps through Casey's crying during the day... so there is hope it will work when they're finally sharing a room!

  • With my daughters who are about 2 years apart in age, we had them sharing a room from when DD2 was about 3 months and on. They still share. I don't remember who went to bed first in the early days, but we usually put them to bed about the same time once DD2 got a little older (somewhere between 6 months and a year, so around now-ish). We never had problems with them waking each other at night, but they have both always been champion sleepers. DD1 seemed to go straight to 1 really long afternoon nap early on, so for DD2's morning naps, I would put her in the bedroom and keep DD1 in the living room with me. Afternoon naps, they both slept in their bedroom. If one of them seemed to be having a hard time sleeping or like they might wake the other up, I just separated them then, and tried again the next day.

I think your set-up will be fine. Maybe just make sure their beds are opposite the wall they share?

  • Our kids will have to share a room eventually but right now DD is still with us. Our room is right next to DSs though. She sleeps through the night but DS doesn't usually, and I worry about him waking her up. We have no set routine as to who goes down when, but usually its around the same time. Sometimes DD is 15-30mins earlier depending on when she wakes up from her last nap. They do afternoon naps around the same time but I get DS settled for his nap first, then put DD down.
We've had no issues of DS waking her when up and in our room in the middle of the night, so I'm not sure why I don't just take the plunge. She's been such a good sleeper, I'm just waiting for teething or something to kick in and turn that around on me!

  • Mine all go to bed around the same time. DD2 is in bed around 8pm and doesn't nap. DD1 goes to bed at 8:30 (and shares a room with DD2). I nurse DD3 to sleep downstairs between 8-8:30pm and put her in her crib whenever the other two are quiet.

  • Sound machines!!!! Seriously, I have 'my 7 month old who wakes up 1-2 times a night (and sometimes fusses while going to sleep) and my 2 year old who occasionally wakes up at night to pee. Their rooms are right next to each other and they have never woken each other up at night. They both go to bed around 7:30pm. Sound machines are awesome!

  • Just wanted to add...usually MH puts my DD to bed while I nurse the baby to sleep. If I'm doing bedtime on my own, I get them both ready for bed, put DD down first and then nurse DS and put him to bed.

What kind of sound machines do you use and do you have them on all night?

  • And how loud do you have the sound machines to drown the noise out?

We have a homedics sound spa for DD. We got it on amazon for around $20. We have some random one for DS that my MIL got. I keep them at about half volume on ocean or rain sounds all night. It doesn't have to totally block out all noise; just muffle everything enough that they can sleep through.

Thanks! I am definitely looking into this.

  • DD is older and she usually goes to bed at 9. I put her down first. I usually put DS in my lap or on his boppy to play. I close my door while I put the baby to bed. I haven't had any problems
