Which food did you start with?

So my little Em turns 6 months tomorrow! We started him on cereal about a week and a half ago and so far he's loving it! I was planning to discuss solids with his pedi on Monday when he had his appointment. However, the appointment has been out off for 2 weeks because of his ear infection.

I would still like to make some sort of purée this weekend to start him on. Those of you doing purées, which vegetable did you start with? Also, since I have no idea what I'm doing, how did you make it? Did you just steam and then blend it?

Help a clueless momma out!

I started with avocado and just mashed it then thinned it down with breastmilk.

We then did bananas (gave digestive issues), sweet potatoes, squash, potato, peas, green beans, broccoli. All I did was steam or bake them then purée.

I always give finger foods as well. For example baked fruit or veggies and sometimes some Crumpet (E's favourite).

We also give puréed meat and fish. We leave it slightly lumpy. Basically I give her whatever we have minus the salt and sugar and only good fats.

Edit: it's good to check with your pedi but this is what we do.

We've done oatmeal, avocado just mashed very well with a fork (she hated it), and banana, also mashed very well with a fork.  I plan on trying sweet potatoes this weekend and am also looking for suggestions on how to cook!

I baked the the sweet potato. Wholesome Baby Foods said it would bring out the sweetness. LO really likes sweet potato.

  • We started with avocado. I mashed it up and pressed it through a fine mesh strainer (stainless steel) and thinned it with breast milk. He loved it! I couldn't mash it thin enough, that's why I strained it. Oncehe can handle a bit more texture, I'll just mash it. We will be doing butternut squash and sweet potato next. I will just bake or steam and then put them in the food processor.

  • We steam and puree our fruits and veggies using the cuisinart baby food maker. it's awesome. kinda expensive, but totally worth it because you can steam and then puree in the same thing. We started with pre-made green beans because we were waiting for our cuisinart, but once we got it, we've done avocado, peas, bananas, zucchini, carrots, sweet potatoes and pears. So far she doesn't "eat" much of it, but has fun with all of it. I think she likes peas the most...go figure, she's like her mama!

@beaubecca I'm addicted to any type of class and a baby food making class sounds great. If you get any good ideas please share.

  • Thanks everyone! I'm thinking of starting avocado tomorrow since it's pretty easy. We'll see. This baby food thing seems so complicated even though I'm sure it's not. I'm excited to start but also miss how easy it was just to pull a boob out to feed him ;-)

  • I started with peas . I have the baby bullet so I boiled them then popped them in the bullet ( a mini blender). We did carrots after the peas and today i mixed both carrots and peas together and she loved it! We start pears tomorrow!

  • I started with bananas then squash. With the squash I cut it in half scoop out the seeds then roast it in the oven. I then throw it in the baby bullet and puree it up. DD loves squash.
