Babies: 6 - 9 Months

How long does it take for solids?

How long does it take for babies to get used to food other than BM?? DS has had oat cereal, oatmeal, apple sauce and chicken and hates them all. I know it's still early in the game, I just can't wait to see what he likes. I also continue to give these foods to get him used to it, so I'm not giving up ;)

I thought it was weird he didn't like the apple sauce but he loved prune juice ( was having poop issues)

  • It can take several tries for a baby to figure out whether or not they like something new... don't give up! I tried to give my son peas several times when we started solids and he hated them! I had one container left of them and decided I'd give it one more shot (after about 7 tries) he finally ate them! Just keep trying! He'll start developing a taste for most of those soon. Good luck!

  • Have you tried different textures? DS hated the runnier baby food jars like Gerber or Beach Nut, but loves mashed avacado like texture. You can use cereal to thicken or just mash up food you cook.

  • Some things like avocado and peas I had to feed to my baby several times before she would eat them. She would eat a couple of bits, make funny faces and shiver the first 4-5 times I fed it to her.

True! Rhys's first food was avocado, and he was not a fan. We gave it to him three days in a row and he didn't like it. We gave it to him again a week or two later, and he ate half an avocado! Just keep trying and offering foods :-)

  • DD hasn't turned down any food yet. Lol
  • With my older kid we started solids at 6 mo but he was basically uninterested until about 10 months when he actually started eating them. We did BLW too so for us food was just about exploring the tastes, textures, smells etc than about really getting food into him.

  • DD hates carrots - we've tried them a few times and she just clamps her mouth shut.  She loves applesauce, pears, sweet potato and squash and is ok with green beans and peas (if they're really thin and smooth).  Cauliflower was iffy and I'm doing white potatoes next then spinach.  It can take a while for them to "like" certain foods.  Have you tried mixing?  DD loves squash with peas or apples with green beans.
  • It took  my LO about 1 month and she is finally getting the hang of it. MY LO#1 was the same way. All babies are different.
