Nettie

We are considering the name Nettie, my DH's great grandmother's name was Nettie.  I don't know if I really like the name or not... What do you all think of the name?

Re: Nettie

  • Seems nn to me, I'm open to almost anything MN spot though so I'd use it there if it was important to you to use it.

  • How about using it as a nn for Anette?
  • It does seem nickname-y but I like it!

  • I had a great-aunt Netta, but it was short for Annette, I believe.
With Nettie, I think of the netty-pot thing.
  • I know someone by the name of Antoinette and they go by Nettie as their nickname.

I've told this story before, but my great-grandma and her first cousin used to love a book titled 'Garnetta, The Silver King's Daughter' when they were kids. They made a pact that the first one to have a daughter would name her Garnetta.

Honestly, I'm not a giant fan of the name, and my great aunt doesn't necessarily love it, but we all love the story of how the name came about. Also, I think the book talked about the name of the character and how she was as precious as a gemstone (Garnetta = Garnet), so I do like that it's a sort of gemstone name.

ETA: I should mention that she does NOT go by Nettie, just Garnetta. Having said that, I know of two other Garnettas where I grew up and one of them goes by Nettie sometimes, I think.

  • Nettie makes me think of that show on TLC, Gypsy Sisters.  So my association to that name is not a good one.  I like pp's suggestions of Annette.

  • Good suggestions on here. I wouldn't use it on it's own as a FN; I think it's better a a NN for something else.

The first thing I thought of was Aquanetta, but I used to listen to Adina Howard's CD A LOT. I'm in da mood. Ha-ay!

  • I think it's an adorable name. Very quaint, and the family connection is nice. If her full name was Nettie, use that. It doesn't really seem like "honoring" someone if you use a different name, IMO.

  • I think of a neti pot. Then I think of nettles. It doesn't appeal to me. Not terrible but also not dignified or substantial.

Neti Pot was the first thing I thought of.

  • My grandmother and I share the first name Jeannette. We both go by Net and Nettie as a NN.

  • Nettie is more of a nickname to me. Try:
    Annette
    Bernadette
    Antoinette
    Lynette
    Janette/Jeanette
    Nanette

  • So as an amazing coincidence, I just finished reading a case (lawsuit) where the defendant was named Nettie!   (But she is not someone who you would want to name a child after.  The subject of the lawsuit was a car accident Nettie had caused after drinking "bottle of home brew, two drinks of whisky, three gin fizzes, and, finally a drink of whisky described as 'terrible stuff.'")

  • I knew a very cool girl in college who went by Nettie. Her full name was Henrietta. (IMO, ouch) I like Jeanette, but I'm partial because it's a family name.
  •  My name is Jeanette, and I cringe when people call me Nettie. It's unpleasant to my ear.

  • A friend went by Nettie in HS (real name was Lynette) but we stopped calling her that because she thought it sounded childish. However, if its a family name I am a firm believer in using the actual name and not another form if you want to honor someone.

  • It is very nn to me.

I love it as a nn but not as a first name.

my mom was Netha nn ofr antoinette

  • Not really a fan. It makes me think of Nessie, like the Loch Ness monster.
  • Nettie reminds me of Gypsy Sisters. I don't dislike it but that is the first thing that comes to mind.
  • For no particular reason, I love it.  Not opposite to it being a NN, though; I think that still honors the namesake.
