Thanks for the replies. I was leaning towards Jemma just because I think the j is prettier than the g but I didn't realize the Gemma spelling was more common... Something to think about
I am apparently the one person in America who adores the name Jemima.
I think this is because I have lived my whole life either in upstate NY or in Vermont, and buying Aunt Jemima "syrup" will practically get you run out of town on a rail. I just don't have the strong association. I don't think I've ever eaten it in my life. ETA: All I ever associated it with before coming on this name board was Jemima Puddle-Duck, from Beatrix Potter!
But anyway, if you're going for the short form I prefer Gemma.

I agree that at first glance a lot of people will see "Jenna" or think that Jemma was a typo/spelling mistake.
All I can think of when I see Jemma is aunt Jemimas pancakes.
Before I caught my autocorrect fail it changes Jemima to Hemingway! Lol
