Breastfeeding

Breast feeding tips needed

What are some ways you were able to keep up your milk supply after you had to start leaving your baby? I have to go back to my college classes when my baby will be not even 6 weeks old, any tips for my supply not dwindling when I have to be gone from her for a few hours 3x a week?

Re: Breast feeding tips needed

  • How many hours will you be away from her?

Pump whenever she has a bottle.  Nurse as often as you can when you are with her.  For some women, that's enough.

You can also do an extra pump session a day...after the first morning feed and store the extra milk in the freezer.  You can also try herbs such as fenugreek and blessed thistle, but I would only do that if you start to notice a decrease in supply.

  • Thank you ladies for the help! I am super nervous about leaving my sweet baby girl when she is just a few weeks old. We will just be developing a routine and BAM I have to leave her...thanks for the advice!!
  • I pump two extra times at night and found a daycare near work so I can go feed in person twice a day.

And definitely hydrate and eat well!  This is the hardest part for me.  I'm so busy at work that I tend to forget to eat and drink enough.
  • Also, when you are with baby, try to have some skin-to-skin time during the day; while nursing is a great time to do it.

  • Drink , drink, and then drink some more. I still nurse my 18 month old and my water consumption has always made an enormous impact on my supply. I make sure to drink at least 80 ounces of water a day. good luck
