Vicks Baby Rub

Do any of you Mommy's know anything about this that I may not find in my research? Or have experiences to share?

DS (almost 8 months) has been congested with a slight cough and major runny nose for 12 days. No fever, no diarrhea, no wheezing. Another mom recommended mixing the baby rub with your baby's lotion and massaging it into the feet before bed.

Thoughts? Help?
Thank you :)

Re: Vicks Baby Rub

  • Same here 7 1/2 months and ruuuuuuuuny nose for 5 days now. Did the feet rub with baby vicks didn't notice any difference. Simple saline and a nose sucker works great though for during the day. We do steamy bath and simple saline before bed and that helps to.

  • I was thinking about trying saline and nasal sucking, but I used the nose frida earlier and he was PISSED! So I don't know if he'd handle that whole process. The kid just needs some relief. He's too congested to keep paci in :(
  • How's your little guy doing? How he is getting better. Our little girl is doing better learned to push back with saline and sucker but it's getting better. She is sleeping easier now to buy still super congested.

  • Any time you come at his face with something he freaks out. Tissues, wipes, nose frida, saline drops. He is kinda sleeping better, but still congested/sick. I'm calling his ped tomorrow. Today is two weeks of this. I don't know if that's normal? I'm glad she's getting better! Sleep is so important for the little ones. Hope she's back to her old self soon :)
  • Ohh dear poor mommy and little guy. I sure hope the ped has something to help you out. We go on vacation in two weeks I sure hope it's gone by then! Good luck with the doc

  • late to the party but we put straight up baby vicks on DD's feet when she's congested.
  • Better late than never :)

We did the vicks on the feet too. I think it helped him sleep at night, but he's also on the up and up so I don't know if it's related. I felt like I didn't put enough on, but I didn't know how much was too much?
  • @pinkandlove77 glad he is doing better.

This. DS got over the bad part of his cold two weeks ago, but he's still sneezing and his nose is a red faucet. I feel awful for him- it's like he just can't shake this!!
What did your pedi say? Any tips or suggestions? I think I'm going to call my pedi tomorrow, too...

  • I actually never had to call her. I don't know if it was timing or the "treatments" but the next morning he had improved a lot. The Vicks on his feet helped his cough and the mucous just ran it's course but dried up quickly.

I really dislike DS's pedi so I'm glad I didn't have to call (we're in the process of switching).

Good luck with your DS though! His poor little nose :(

I have been doing the saline and suction bulb every morning and night for DD, they don't like it one bit, but I do if clearing her will help her eat.  I swaddle them up in a towel to help it go faster, then you pinch the opposite nostril shut to get a good vacuum for the maximum efficiency (I figure, if I'm torturing them, get the most bang for my buck), one or two sucks per nostril and she's clear.

(these are tips from the nurses when DS was hospitalized for a week with RSV, and then another week the next year for pneumonia:  Wrap them up, saliene, bulb sucker squeezed, aim toward the back of the head, pinch the opposite nostril and suck the boogies)

That is great advice. I know he'd still fight like hell but it's worth a shot! Fortunately, he's cleared up now but I know it won't be the last time he's stuffy. Thank you!
  • Andrea- that was great advice! I just made DH read it- so we both can be better at it! Thank you so much for sharing!!
DS is still totally stuffed up. Can't wait to try this tomorrow! I bet it will help!
