TTC after 35

I feel like a newbie at this…Help with OPKs

Hi ladies!  I'm on a medicated cycle of femora this month and my RE told me to use OPKs over the weekend to look for a surge.  This was a super quick in and out appointment while I received my shot so there wasn't any time to ask questions…Also, it's been about 3 years since I've used these things and I've forgotten some of the details that aren't in the instructions.

1.)  Do I use my 1st morning urine or is that the one that is most inaccurate?  I can't remember.
2.)  How many times a day do I test? Once? Twice? This box had 7 tests

Thanks!  There was a time when I had all this information stored in my brain but it is all gone now.

Oh.  I'm CD11 right now.

Re: I feel like a newbie at this…Help with OPKs

  • I would test two or even three times per day, and not bother with FMU, they say LH surges later in the morning so it can be pretty difficult to catch with FMU. Test at around 11/lunch time, and again around supper time, you could also test at bedtime if you are getting close to positives and it looks like your surge is imminent. If this isn't your cycle, for future I would look into getting Wondfos or other cheapies from Amazon or elsewhere online, you can get so many more tests for much cheaper than the store brands.

I felt like an OPK dummy too (still do), but I finally got my surge indicator this past Wednesday.  I was initially testing at the wrong time because I thought I O'd much earlier than I did.  I tested between noon and 2pm and again in the evening. On the day I tested positive - afternoon test came up negative, but the evening was +.

In case you need to purchase more - may women purchase from Amazon as the price is cheaper than in the stores.  I initially purchase 7 from Walgreens cost $40.  I went to Wal-Mart and got 20 for $35.  Promptly returned the unopened box to Walgreens with a swiftness!  Lastly, I have a HSA/FSA (Flexible Spending Account or Health Savings Account) and I was able to use my account to purchase.  Could work for others as well.

    Good luck!

Don't worry, I'm working on it.

  • Wondfo's on Amazon.com are around $22 for 50 OPK's and 20 HPT. Great deal and you don't feel bad about testing multiple times a day. The only thing is that you first have to pee in a cup and dip the stick in...kind weird when you're at work and want to test. But you do what you gotta do! Also, if you DO get the Wondfo's, you will see the line get darker as the surge nears. however, they say you aren't surging unless the line is as dark or darker than the control line.

  • Awesome answers!  thank you everyone.  My DS left his glasses on a bag of rice at Costco (had to retrace all my steps after I checked out), I placed an entire 20 oz bottle of water in my diaper bag without securing the lid, I Ieft the front door open and blowing in the breeze (its about 15*) for 3 or 4 hours all today.

I really, really, really, really appreciate you guys making something easy for me because I feel like I need a mommy looking out for me today.  I'm a hot mess.
