Pregnant after 35

Relieved: Verifi result was false positive!

30 days after my Verifi prenatal free-cell DNA test came back showing monosomy X, my final amniocentesis result came back as 46XX.

Such a relief!

The genetic counselor offered to do microarray testing on the fetal cells from the amniocentesis. The microarray testing would test for over 245 other chromosomal abnormalities. Given that I've already had one false positive test result and that all the US/scans look great, I think I will decline the microarray :>

  • Thank you everyone! Yes, it is rare to have a false positive and it usually doesn't happen. Just glad it is over now!

Just like you, I also had a false positive for Turner syndrome (monosomy X) when I took the Verifi prenatal test. Fortunately, my final CVS results just came back, and they are all completely normal.  In writing, I just want to thank you so much for sharing your story. The wait for the CVS results was excruciating, but it was stories like yours that gave me hope. I also had to keep reminding myself that this was only a screening test, not a diagnostic test, and false positives do happen, particularly for new tests such as these. For others who might be experiencing a similar situation, I also found the following blog posts on false positives for Verifi and other cell-free fetal DNA prenatal tests (e.g., MaterniT21, Panorama) that you might be interested in hearing about as well...
  • Based on my conversation with Sequenom (materniT21), the test is 99% accurate. If they have undetermined results, they report as a positive so that additional testing to be done. They would prefer an expectant woman to have another test (CVS, amnio) rather than report a negative and then the baby be born with an issue.
