New doctor consult this morning- Long

So this morning I had a skype consultation with a reproductive immunologist. I guess I can sum it up as frustrating and encouraging all at the same time. He said, as I'm sure everyone knows, there is a 50/50 shot we will find what my problem is. So along with the testing I had done 2 years ago I will have a hysteroscopy done (which they could have done during my D&C in 2011!!!), AMH testing (which he thinks isn't a problem since I have a living child, but he wants to rule it out), and the last test for natural killer cells.

He said the puzzling thing, and the partial cause of my frustration, is that I have two normal karotype pregnancies that we know of. One I carried to term and the other I miscarried and had a D&C at 9 weeks. So he wonders why one worked and the other didn't work. There was one change in that pregnancy, I went from baby aspirin to Lovenox. He told me that Lovenox isn't necessary in my case and related it to a card game. You get one hand and it's a bad hand, then you get a 2nd hand and while it's being dealt you yell "Abracadabra" and it's a good hand. Just because you said that doesn't mean that's what caused the good hand. I was under the impression that was the cure that fixed my problems.

He said IVF w/PGD could be revisited, since my genetic counselor suggested that before, but that doesn't fix the problem of why I miscarried a normal fetus. So I am scheduling a hysteroscopy. There was a ton of information, so I'm still confused, but the last resort (and only a 1% chance) would be to test to see if my husband and I have the same (for the lack of an easier non medical term) barcode, think of people being matches for donating organs. This is where things got interesting. I guess mother nature decided in order to keep in-breeding from becoming a problem if two people are too similar in their "barcodes" a baby from them would be rejected. While we wouldn't be 100% matches since we have a child, we could be partial matches. And trust me we aren't related!!! We are both from completely different parts of the world, but people can still be matched and somehow end up together. Guess this is why opposites attract.

I'm just afraid I'm going to end up with an unexplained IF DX on top of my other diagnosed problems. I got lucky in that we found issues in my initial testing. I know so many couples don't get that lucky.

Wow that is a lot of interesting information! Makes some sense and I would totally be interested in the results and what comes of it all.

  • It sounds like you got some good information from the doctor and this could be the avenue that gets you pregnant and bring home a baby.

I am starting Ivf with psd in December or January.

  • What is PGD?

Sorry, I'm ignorant. Someone care to educate me? You ladies are smarter than google anyway :)

Pre-genetic implantation testing. :) To test for genetic issues.

I will definitely keep you all updated on all of this. If he's right and I can stop Lovenox I would love that, but it would scare me considering my MFM is pro at least baby aspirin (for life in general with MTHFR) and it was something that seemed to work with my daughter! Luckily the killer cell test takes 7-10 days, so I should hopefully have answers as soon as I can get into my OB's office for an appointment.
