Can't tell if I'm feeling baby

edited November 2013 in April 2014 Moms
One more reason to hate the caboose! I'm so jealous reading about kicks and flutters! Tonight I asked DH to poke my belly and tell little one to move around for me. (Thought the pickle might listen to it's daddy.) I concentrated really hard and thought I felt some swoops (like when you're nervous) in the direction away from the poking, but don't know if that's baby or not because I AM nervous to feel my baby move for the first time. My doc said I shouldn't expect to feel movement until closer to week 20 - I assume because of my weight and that I'm a FTM - so I know it's early for me. I just want to feel my baby, and start to feel like this whole pregnancy is real!

I guess there's not much point to this post except to rant about the caboose and use a lot of parenthesis and dashes. And drive some of you nuts about duh-posts, I'm sure. ;) Any moms - second time around or otherwise - want to share how they KNEW it was their baby and not something else, or a figment of their imagination?

Re: Can't tell if I'm feeling baby

  • With my first I didn't feel him until a little after 20 weeks, my second I felt him really early around 12-13 weeks. Now this time around I'm 18 weeks and I haven't felt her move yet. My doctor said I should feel her soon so we will see. They say you feel your baby earlier then you were in your first pregnancy. I believed it at first but now how the way things are now I'm not buying it. I hope we feel our babies soon!! I would love to feel her move.

  • I'll tell you I was really confused about whether or not it was baby for a while.  Then after seeing it and feeling it during the AS, I'm much more confident about saying "That was baby."  Now I'm feeling him all the time.

  • I'm a ftm and I've been feeling the baby for maybe 2.5. (I'm 17 weeks) its not all the time but usually once a day or every other day. The dr helped me realize what it was for sure, she said I have one of the most active babes she has ever seen. That is prolly why I have movement so soon but, in my opinion that swoop was prolly baby. My dr said trust my instincts. Dont listen to when other ftm are feeling movement or not, you are different from them. I'm a little bigger and thought that would keep me from it but nope. Don't take this the wrong way but concentrate the hardest after something that gets your heart beating. Like a little caffeine or sex or a fast walk. Idk, I guess I rambled a little I'm just saying listen to you, if you question it, its prolly baby, In MY opinion. :)
  • I'm a STM and I'm still not sure if I'm feeling baby. Early on I knew I was feeling flutters but that stopped. Now at 20 weeks ill be laying in bed and get what I think is a kick or two. It's frustrating! By this time with my dd I was feeling consistent movements. Hang in there! You'll feel LO before ya know it.
  • I have an anterior placenta and have only been feeling movement for maybe the last week or so. I can feel it a lot more easily if I'm sitting or laying very still and not moving around a lot. And a lot of times it still feels an awful lot like gas bubbles. Just be patient, you'll feel it :-)

  • I'm also a plus-size-FTM and I have no idea if its baby or not. I'll be 18w tomorrow. I have felt what I think is baby, but... it might just be my head playing tricks on me, too.

  • I'm only 95% sure that what I'm feeling is baby (FTM). It seems like they are over so quick it's hard to decipher what it really was. One thing I noticed though what that when I use my doppler and if it's a time that baby is active, he freaks out a bit and I can feel him rolling and moving out of the way. Poor guy, I'm guessing those sounds waves are loud. When he is obviously resting/sleeping he doesn't do that. So using the doppler was cool because I knew it obviously had to be baby when he moved.

Had our first baby, Samuel Robert, on April 17, 2014!

  • FTM and started to feel confident that the jabs were baby a few days ago...so at the end of 17 weeks. I was positive that it wasn't gas because s(he) kept kicking in the same spot. I then used my doppler to make sure, and sure enough...that's where baby's heartbeat as and I kept hearing swooshing! Now that I know for sure what it feels like, I notice frequent movement in the morning, afternoon, and night!
Yesterday I'm *pretty* sure I could feel it from the outside because I had my hand on my belly, and s(he) rolled over, and something hard pressed against me. Screamed for DH to see if he could feel anything (lol i'm sure it's too early for that!)

So maybe just another week or so for you :) But my OB also told me at my 16-week appt that most women don't feel anything until closer to 20.

  • I wasn't sure if what I was feeling was the baby over the last few weeks (I'm 20w 2d). UNTIL LAST NIGHT. I was lying flat on my back with my hand on my stomach and I felt a really distinct kick ON THE OUTSIDE! I was so excited. I called my DH into the room and he ended up feeling one of the kicks too :)
  • I'm 18 weeks now, and haven't felt a single thing...except maybe baby reaching over and squeezing my ovaries.

  • I am plus sized and feel flutters once or twice a day. At night after my sugary snack I lay flat on the bed and I can feel light kicks or nudges. Today I felt the first full fledged kick!

I never feel confident enough to say that what I am feeling is definitely baby until I start feeling the very obvious kicks/taps. I am just over 17 weeks with #2 and for the past week I have started to feel comfortable in assuming it's baby, but it's still just an assumption to me. It's enough that it eases my mind about baby's well-being though.

If it is a feeling I would find odd/unusual when not pregnant and it isn't followed by gas or gut rumbles, I assume it is baby. But yeah, these days it feels like a very brief wiggle or swish. I have only felt possible taps a couple of times.

ETA: The wiggles or swishes are more obviously baby to me. The popcorn feeling is something that could happen with gas. So when I feel a true wiggle or swish (like a little snake almost, creepy I know) is when I am the most sure it is baby.

  • 17 weeks and ftm. I think I started feeling the baby this week. It only happens when I am laying down, I thought it might have been too early to feel anything, but it keeps happening when I am laying down so I don't know what else it could be! Hoping it is the baby!
  • I never felt "flutters" - just pops and rolling.  The pops feel almost like a muscle spasm/twitch.  I had heard people describe the pops as "like gas kind of" and "like bubbles popping" but I never really got that sensation.  As soon as I heard it described as a muscle spasm-type feeling, I knew that's what I had been feeling.

This is me too. I feel him all the time now. I'll be 20 weeks tomorrow!
  • For me, I wasn't sure until I felt it on the outside. Then I could match up the feeling on the inside with the feeling on the outside. I can only feel it when I lay on my back (to move the extra cushion out of the way a little ;) ) and I put my hand at the very bottom of my belly where my I know my uterus is. Then I can actually feel the little one shift, roll, or kick on the outside. I know it's not me because it feels like a tiny person in there wiggling around. Lol it's kind of terrifying, but in a wonderful way :)

I first just started to feel pressure in one particular spot, and then it would go away. I wasn't sure if that was baby or gas, but now I'm pretty sure it was baby. Then about a week later I suddenl started getting major kicks. I never had flutters or pops. Now I can feel the rolling, also. I'm FTM and have some meat on me.

I've had the major kicks for about a week, and there was no denying it was baby.. my stomach doesn't spasm like that by itself! I think once you feel it, you'll know. Maybe try drinking some OJ- that usually gets 'em moving.

eta: I was exactly as far along as you when I started to feel the weird pressure that I wasn't sure was baby. In week 17 I got the kicks.

  • FTM, 20 weeks now. I started feeling weird little pokes around 18 weeks. I knew it was baby since it was random, in 1 spot and then another the next day. I wouldn't call it flutters either, more like a nervous twitch like when your eyelid twitches & you can't control it. Now I'm 20 weeks it is still sporadic movement but starting to feel it slightly more often. I am also starting to notice what time of day the baby is most active. Another trick I started using, in the evening while lounging & watching tv I drink orange juice while hubs drinks his scotch. The juice seems to get the baby hopping pretty good :) good luck!
  • Ok. I also think I've felt something when I'm up and directing and singing with my students. I'll feel a little jab/swoosh that makes me think if gas bubbles but different. But if we're supposed to feel it more when we're still, I don't know. Maybe it's my round ligaments stretching? It's not painful like that normally is, though. I just thought my kid liked the sound of my voice. :) you've given me a lot of food for thought, ladies.

  • 18 weeks For me it feels like he move after I eat.. Feels like little pulsing like he's punching me with his tiny fists. It could be all in my head FTM so who knows if my nuts or on point.

Hop you feel your LO soon :x

  • As PP's have said - the popcorn feeling had me unsure for awhile. I started feeling movement just this past week (19wks) as a FTM. It was erratic enough for me not to be sure, but when it was more regularly erratic, I felt more confident identifying it. The big swooshes or rolls made me sure - how you described it sounds like how I would. I've also noticed that if I eat some candy (like a handful of jelly bellies) - anything with a lot of sugar, I'll feel the movement. You can try doing that and see if that gets you anywhere. I noticed today that baby wakes up and starts moving around if I'm laughing a lot. I had two big belly laughs today and about 5-10 minutes later, I could feel kicking and moving around.

It started happening for me when I least expected it!

I'm a FTM, 20w 3d, I've started feeling movements about 1.5 weeks ago but this week has been movements all throughout the day. I feel flutters and taps from the inside and if I press my hand where the movement is I can actually feel baby on the outside which is pretty cool.

Eta: wanted to add.It helps to eat something really sweet and lie in your back. The sugar rush makes them move around.
  • I hope you feel the LO soon. I started thinking it was baby a few weeks ago (at about 16 weeks) just like butterflies or bubbles. On Tuesday night I felt a clear sweeping motion against my belly about 3 inches from my belly button...that was definitely baby - been feeling it every day now usually in the AM. I have heard from lost of people that it helps to drink something cold and with sugar about 10 minutes or so, then lay down still.

Ooh..yay - I've totally been feeling the muscle spasm thing and hoping it was was the baby, since it was definitely a new sensation and concentrated in a small spot (baby sized :) ). Glad to hear that's a "normal" description of the baby moving!

17w FTM here, and I've been feeling this off and on the past week.

  • This might be a silly statement/question, so forgive me. I too am a plus size momma. I wonder how this delays you from feeling baby move inside. I wouldn't think the inside of your uterus has extra cushion. I can see taking longer to feel on the outside.

I'll be 17w tomorrow and am definitely feeling something going on in there. :)

    So exciting!
  • I feel for you being the caboose of the A14 club.  It must be kinda hard seeing so many reach milestones first.  I do think that what you are feeling is baby moving.  I felt my first movement at 19 weeks on the dot and also felt him/her at work.  It was not flutters or popcorn but a distinct swooshing feeling.  I echo other ladies in that I feel movement more consistently when I'm laying down at night.

  • I'm crazy and have a doppler and listen every night.. One night a few weeks ago I was feeling what I thought mightttt be baby but it was on the opposite side of where I usually find the heartbeat. Used the Doppler and yup! Baby was right there :) otherwise I would've been confused if it was baby or not

The caboose is the worst! I feel so behind!!! I don't really look pregnant, I don't feel anything fun (just gas pains and some nausea!) and practically everyone else is at the halfway point!! Guess someone has to back up the end! :) here's to the ladies in the last week of April for patience!
