Got an induction date; trying to go pain med free

Since last Saturday (when I had my fall) I've been contracting everyday, contractions all day long about 10/12 minutes apart, and then almost once a day a set of contractions that are 2-4 minutes apart for about 2-3 hours. However, in that week I've only effaced 80 percent and dilated 2cm.

Doctor seems to think baby may make his debut this weekend, but if not I am now scheduled for an induction on Monday evening!! (Little nervous that he may arrive on Monday, that's my fathers birthday; we don't really get along too well so I'm hoping he can have his own birthday) also, just hoping if I do get induced, that I can manage a pain med free labor and delivery!!! (I believe I read that some women have done so already? My mom just seems to think its almost impossible if you are induced to go all natural)

I'm getting very nervous/anxious!

I would just say keep an open mind. You won't know what it's like until you get there and everyone has different pain thresholds.

I was induced and it's hard to deal w pain when you are on all the monitors and they wouldn't let me use the shower or tub. I got an epidural after the pain got really bad, a couple hours after they broke my water.

@CarrieB. That's what I have heard, that it makes it a lot harder to control and breathe thru. I have a semi irrational fear of needles going into my back, so I just fear the epidural!

I'm hoping for the same thing! And I understand waiting your child to have his/her own day. I'm 6 days past due today and was terrified id have baby today on SILs birthday. Who I can't stand about 90% of the time. The 20th is my moms and I get induced that night. Hoping LO waits until midnight lol.

@mapayne626 I completely agree! I know baby will make his debut when it happens, but I just hope he comes before or waits until Tuesday; as bad as that sounds.

My dads was 10 days before edd, FILs was 8 days before edd, DHs was three days after, SILs is 6 days after and my moms is 12 after.. I've had a lot to dodge.. Then my mom so sweetly reminds me that the 23 (3 days after induction) is the day my aunt died. Thanks mom. I just want my child to have his/her own happy day to celebrate coming into this world!!! Not so much to ask is it??? Lol.

Wow! I thought I had a lot to dodge, my moms first husbands birthday was this past Monday, and then my dads is this Monday, but I just want him to have his own day! Haha. I feel like if I had a better relationship with my father I wouldn't mind as much, but the fact that I don't makes it more stressful wanting him to have his own day.

I bet! That's why I want to avoid my moms.. We get along. But in small doses. But I'm getting induced at nine pm on her birthday and they're not expecting LO to arrive until dinner time the next night. So I think you'll be okay! Inductions are not quick!

I am in the same boat. I was hoping to progress naturally. Unfortunately, it is not going that way. Currently, I'm 1cm, 50% effaced and that is with the use of cervidil last Thursday. When we had our induction talk I told her no misopristol so we pushed the induction back. I'll be 41 weeks tomorrow and the plan is to try induction on Monday. If you have an induction, have an open mind and know the options.

Hi there, totally lurking from another board!! But I'm just excited so I'm lurking in November from the January board. Anyway, I'm a ftm here, but my aunt was induced for two of her labors and she definently gave birth naturally. She said it was hard, but she did it. So it can be done. Try to relax, super important. No advice here (I'm a FTM too) but I wanted to say good luck! I think the key is to go in with an open mind - if you are able to go med free that is awesome, but if you end up feeling the need for pain meds they are available. The main thing is for you and LO to be healthy.

I agree with PP that you should definitely keep an open mind. I think it's great that you want to go med free, but if you are induced, please keep in mind that it is okay to need pain management. I'm a FTM and have never had to go through an induction, but I've heard a lot of people say that the pain tends to be magnified, so don't be afraid to ask for drugs if you need pain management!

As a mom who went completely med-free, I say kudos to you for wanting to try! I won't lie, it was absolutely the most painful thing I have ever experienced in my life. However, seeing how strong, alert and responsive my daughter is, I wouldn't have gone any other way. For me, it was very much a case of mind-over-matter. Believe in yourself and your strength. Just because others found the pain to be too much once induced, does not mean you cannot go med free with an induction.

Good luck to you!!!! I was induced via pitocin and ended up med-free during the last 4 hours of labor and delivered naturally (had an epi at one point in the beginning but it fell out). You can do it! It was definitely extremely hard but as PP said, mind over matter - focus on the end result. All the best!

Def keep an open mind. Induction sometimes makes the pain magnified and it can take longer. After laboring for about 12 hours I took an epidural. And after 15 hours I was only dialated to 2-3cm. Then I had to have an emergency c section because things went a little haywire and couldn't have a vaginal birth, which was fine by me because baby and I were in a stess situation. So please keep an open kind so you don't upset yourself, you will need all your energy to focus.
I may have been induce and had a c section, but my baby is very healthy, scored a 9/10 on that test in the hospital, lol, is super strong (holds his head up already) so I am very happy with the outcome:)

I was just induced yesterday. I got the cydotec at 9am felt my first contraction at 11am and had LO in my arms by 3pm

he was a totally med free delivery and I wouldn't have had it any other way! 8lbs 9oz and 21 in...he's a big boy! Just go with what you think is right and what you want! You won't regret it!

I had to be started on pitocin when Madeline was born. I had been in labor with my water broken for 16 hours and was only contracting 2-3 times an hour and was only 3cm and 50% effaced. Since I did't go into active labor on my own, I can't say whether the contractions were more painful or not. They are excruciating though. I did get a dose of IV pain meds to help with the pain, though they didn't ease the pain, they just spaced the contractions out to about 5 minutes apart dorm an hour so I could nap between contractions. My midwife said that after the first dose, its not as effective anymore. I ended up being in labor for 28 hours, and did it without an epidural, although the last few hours when I was in transition, I was seriously debating it, but there was no point by then.

I will say that sitting on the toilet and rocking through the contractions helped, as well as standing and swaying through the contractions. They felt so much worse when I was laying down. Try to focus on your breathing, don't hold your breath and try not tense up during a contraction. When my SO or midwife reminded me to breathe and relax, I was able to focus a bit more and do what they said. It still hurts like a bitch.

Keep an open mind. I'm very stubborn and refused to give up after all those hours of labor. If you can't handle the pain or are afraid you'll be too tired to push, get the pain meds. That's why I got the dose of IV meds. I had been in labor 20 hours at that point and was only 4-5cm with back to back contractions every 1.5-2 minutes. I knew if that kept up that I wouldn't have the energy to push.

I had to be induced. I was able to go without the epi for 5 hours. By the time I got it, I wanted to die. My contractions were right.on.top of each other. I wasn't dilating as fast as they wanted me to, either.

I, too, was TERRIFIED of a needle going in my back. And it hurt a little bit. But I was in heaven afterwards. I was able to sleep, which I really needed for the 4+ hours of unsuccessful pushing I did. Since I was able to relax I went from a 3 to a 5 in an hour and then a 5 to a 6.5 an hour after that. Then it happened fast. It really helped me and so far, I haven't had an residual pain at the site. I would just say, keep an open mind. Good luck!

Thank you so much ladies for all the advice! I'm glad to hear that those who did get an Epi had a good experience with it! I get so worried about things like that and putting medicines and needles into my body!

I'm definitely hoping for all natural/med free but I know too that I don't need to be a hero, and my SO is being very supportive but he's also very supportive of if I were to give up the med free and go for the Epi which makes me feel better about the situation!

Sadly, I'm still not dilated anymore as of today, and contractions still haven't picked up, so it is looking as of now (I still have two more days, crosses fingers!!) that I may have to end up being induced to help my body along!

For all the mommies hoping to go med free too, good luck!! I hope you are able to do so as well!

and all the mommies who've already given birth I can't put into words how much I'd like to congratulate you, med free or not, the closer I get the more terrified I am getting of all the "what ifs" so y'all are my heroes right now!
