Hysterical Moments Anyone? Sorry, it's long

Lately, DS has been having these moments where he cries, and these are like full blown cries. Not usual cries. Anyway, this happened twice already. I am at a total loss at what is wrong. The first time it happened he was in his car seat last week. He seemed absolutely fine and then all of a sudden he started hysterically crying. I had pulled into a parking lot and tried to calm him. He'd calm down for a minute or two and then he would start back up. I tried giving him a bottle and some snacks, he didn't want them. I tried giving him his pacifier, he didn't want it (which is unusual). Finally after rocking him for maybe 10-20 minutes he calmed down long enough to fall asleep. (All the crying tuckered him out, I'm guessing?) The next time it happened was tonight. He was fast asleep in his crib and then he woke up crying hysterically once again. I rocked him and rocked him. Same thing, he would calm down for a moment then start up again. I checked his temperature, checked that his crib was safe from bugs or anything along the lines of that (We started to do this when we found a snake in our kitchen one day), I tried seeing if he was hungry or he wanted his pacifier. DH even try to calm him down but DS started crying harder. He finally calmed down after I rocked him for a while. And now he is wide awake playing like nothing ever happened.

I just don't know what is going on. I'm not sure if he is teething (he has zero teeth) and being a ftm I'm not sure what I'm looking for exactly. He has had two colds already but when these situations happen he doesn't have even a trace of a cold. So, what are your thoughts on this? Anyone been through this before? He has his 9 month wellness check-up this Thursday and I will be bringing this up with his pediatrician.

TIA!
