NWMR - Hypoglycemia?

I've been having dizziness/lightheadness every day for the past 2-3 weeks.  Coupled with some other inconsistent symptoms (hair falling out, cold all the time, forgetful, depressed feeling), I thought I might have a thyroid issue.  I saw a NP at my dr's office the other day, who declared that everything was due to a sinus issue.  At my insistence, she ordered some bloodwork.

I then called for an appointment with an endocrinologist, and they sent me back to the lab to get my thyroid checked.  When I got there, they didn't have any orders, but saw that my other results showed that my thyroid was fine, but that my blood sugar was very low.  I'd eaten about an hour before the blood was drawn, so there's some concern.

I'm working on getting an appointment with an endocrinologist, but Dr Google is scaring the crap out of me.  The best case that I can find is that I have diabetes, which is extremely unlikely.  I'm not overweight, and there's no history in my family.  I'm seeing stuff like pancreatic disorders, cancer, etc.

Does anyone have a history with this that is a result of something relatively benign?  I just don't want to continue to panic until I can see the doctor...

Thanks!!!

Re: NWMR - Hypoglycemia?

  • I've been hypoglycemic since I was 12. No cause. My blood sugar just tends to be low. Other than needing to ensure I eat very regularly and really pay attention to symptoms like being tired, it has had no impact on my life at all. I am, frankly, healthy as a horse.

  • Thank you both so much.  I've got some other symptoms that are concerning (hair loss, for example), but if it's possible that it's just something I have to manage with diet, then that's great.

  • Women tend to have lower blood sugar than men. Mine reads "low" on a glucometer even when I feel fine.

  • I'm hypoglycemic and was diagnosed when I was about 18. It's mostly not a big deal. If my blood sugar gets low, I become really cranky and sometimes get a nasty headache. If it gets really, really low, I can pass out but never have. Usually, a quick hit of orange juice picks it back up until I can get real food.
