Moms of boys- how do I point it down?

My LO is 5 days old today. His circ gauze is off and we are lubing it up with Vaseline each change. I have heard to "point the penis down" in the diaper, but it's so little, how the heck would you point it anywhere?

I'm missing something. I'm pretty bummed this morning bc he woke up with a leaky diaper and pee up to his armpit. Help?

You just...point it down

Make sure the tip isn't pointed toward his belly button and you're good to go. Also, make sure you're pulling out the butt ruffles around his legs and are doing up the tabs pretty tight.

If you point it up the pee just shoot out the top of the diaper.

Also OP, I just realized you said you're lubing up with Vaseline. That right there can be the problem. It makes it impossible for the diaper to absorb the pee. You just need a tiny amount on the end of the penis so it doesn't stick. You don't need a lot.

You do need to put a decent amount on his penis until it is fully healed because you don't want it to stick to his diaper. I would dap the vaseline on his actual penis vs putting it on the diaper so that way you can still have the absorption of the diaper. If you put the vaseline on the penis it will stop the pee from sitting on his skin vs sitting on the diaper...if that makes sense.

This. I also close one side of the diaper then point it down before closing the other side. That's the easiest way to do it.

We used gauze squares and put vaseline all over it and then put it on it so that it stayed clean around there, but if he went pee it soaks the gauze and won't stay in place.

We had an issue with the a&d ointment basically sealing the diaper. We we constantly dealing with leaking diapers. DH finally started just putting it exactly where the tip of DS' penis touched the diaper and it helped alot.

Right, I'm just putting the Vasoline directly on his penis, basically the part that is red and looks like it could stick to the dipe.

I just figured out to pull out the inner butt ruffles too. LO is long and skinny, so the leg holes on these Huggies seem enormous. We are going out for Pampers Swaddlers when DH gets home tonight since I can't drive.

All of the above plus Pampers Swaddlers are much better than Huggies for us. LO always peed out of Huggies. Still does. (I've had to use a few because they were given to us, and I couldn't exchange them.)

Yep, just point it down as well as you can. It is hard to do when it's little. I agree with people that the Vaseline is making your diaper not absorb.

lol, I love this thread! My DH and I are having our first date night next week and my parents are going to watch DS. My parents only had girls and my Dad asked for a refresher on diaper changing. When I told him to point it down, he had no idea how to do that! For some reason I just assumed guys would know how to point it down

You should be able to exchange without a receipt at Wal-Mart. I had the same problem. DS peed out the top of his diaper well after his circ healed so no Vaseline issue.

Pamper's Swaddlers are my faves. And I second (or third or fourth, whatever), closing one side and then checking to see that it's pointing down. I never really give it much thought because DS has never leaked out of a diaper, and he's wet and poopy literally every time we change him. That's why I love the swaddlers so much! Also make sure you're using the right size... we were in the hospital for four days and by the last day we were there, the nurse switched him to size ones because the NB size was too small. Could help leakage issues!

I would watch the umbilical stump with the peeing out the top ds fell of early because it kept getting wet.

Yes def point it down! His first night home we went thorough 5 outfits bc he kept peeing up into his belly bc I did t know this lol...just push it down, no trick really.

I would be careful cutting back on Vaseline, you don't want it to stick. And we used gauze pads to put the Vaseline on and I would sort of angle it to where the pee would go down instead of up. I never aimed his little penis. And we also had a ton better luck with pampers versus huggies.
