Car Seats

I'm thinking about not doing the infant carrier seat and just going with a birth to booster (or birth to 40lbs) car seat. What do you all think? I know those carriers can be handy, but I also hate carrying them around.
It's been 11 years since I had a baby & I'm feeling like a newbie!

Re: Car Seats

  • If you're an avid baby-wearer it might not be too bad, but otherwise it's tricky. What will you do with baby at a restaurant? Church? Shopping? It can definitely be done, but I think the carrier sure comes in handy for a while.

  • With a newborn/infant, I loved that I could buckle her in while we were inside, especially during the winter.  Also, because she was napping all of the time, it was nice to not wake her up. It was also nice to have somewhere for her to sleep if we went somewhere and she fell asleep.

  • I was thinking I'd use the bassinet that comes with the stroller for sleeping inside, but I guess that doesn't really work for transferring from car to home if they are sleeping. Good points ladies. I hadn't thought about restaurants.

We just had the 3in1 for DS and it worked just fine. It is not good for baby's development to spend too much time in a car seat, so as convenient as it is, what's best for baby trumps that IMO.
Baby's should only be in a car seat when in the car.
Also - was great to only buy 1 carseat (that he is still in) and not have to spend extra money when we don't have to.
  • I wouldn't want to wrangle a newborn into a convertible. So much easier to do it in the house!

  • totally sticking with the infant carrier!!!  So much easier and especially in the winter months they have a nice warm seat!!

  • We'll use DD's infant car seat, we still have a few years before it expires. We are kind of cheap though.

  • Is it sillly to register for both? If we get one we could buy the other, if we get both great?

  • I'll be using the carrier again because it's still good from when C used it.  If baby falls asleep in it, (s)he gets to finish her nap in it in the house/store/where ever.  Other than that, we don't keep baby in it if we're not in the car.  With a toddler as well, it makes sense for us to use the carrier again, because then we have a free hand for C.

  • My son who is now almost 4 was in an infant carrier until he was 7-8 months. It was nice to have plus I feel those seats are structured more for an infant. We did buy a 3 in 1 convertible seat once he got too heavy to haul around in the carrier. The same will hold true for this new baby next year. LO will stay in an infant seat until they're too heavy and then we will transition to a convertible seat.

  • We aren't buying an infant seat this time either, just a 3-in-1. I hated lugging the infant seat around. I'd much rather get a nicer baby wearing system in place for when we're out.

  • I did find an infant carrier that weighs 8lbs, the maxi cosi mico. That might be an option as it may be easier to carry. What if I do have a kid that only sleeps in the car?! Good point, that hadn't occurred to me.
