Pregnant after a Loss

Thinking about a Sonoline B monitor?

Is this a bad idea? I'd love to keep track of the baby when I feel upset or nervous. But then I worry how I'd panic & feel if one day at home I couldn't get a heartbeat. Just wondering if any PGaL gals can relate or have input?

Re: Thinking about a Sonoline B monitor?

  • Maybe it's because I just got mine, but I can't imagine not having it. It has given me so much peace of mind at a time when I really needed it. I've been very lucky to be able to find the heartbeat within 5 minutes every time, and so haven't had the panic moments (fx it stays that way).

My advice would be to wait until 10-11 weeks to order it. Some people can find it as early as 9 weeks, but most not until 12. If you order it at 10-11, hopefully it won't get to you until 11-12 weeks, and then you can tinker with it and hopefully find it more easily.

Ultimately, you know your personality and stress level better than anyone. If not being able to find it a few times is going to send you into a panic attack, it might not be a good idea.

  • I agree! It is so nice to be able to hear the heartbeat, especially when I can't feel movement yet. I was able to find the heartbeat at about 10 weeks, but it took a lot of patience and about an hour. Once I found it the first time, it takes maybe 10 secs to find again. But everyone is different and it would be wise to ensure you don't have an anterior placenta, which could cause you some unneeded scares.

  • I think most are 50/50 on this. I have one and love it! I feel like it's kept me sane through this pregnancy so far! I do have to tell myself to not freak if I can't find the HB. I give myself 3-5 minutes and if I don't find the HB I put it down, don't stress and try later. I think for some it could cause more anxiety than help. It's up to you but like I said I LOVE mine!
  • Best purchase ever. Kept me sane through my pregnancy with DS and has been helping a lot with this pregnancy too.

  • Okay thanks, this was all very helpful. Being prepared not to hear anything sometimes is a helpful tip.

  • I have been wondering about getting one. DH had said no but has now conceded and says "whatever you want..." while groaning. Which I take as a yes :) I literally just now clicked on the "But it" button on EBay! I am nervous but excited, I think it will be more beneficial than detremental for me.

  • I didn't get mine until 15 weeks. I think waiting was better for me so I didn't drive myself crazy. Even being 15 weeks, I wasn't able to find the hb the first time. I took a break and the second time I tried it, I found it after looking for a while.

That being said, it's been awesome. From when we got it to being able to feel movement, it saved my sanity a lot. It's still great when LO has his slow days.

  • It is definitely a personal decision.  I would not have survived my last pregnancy without it.  Anytime that I would freak out for one reason or another I was able to listen and calm down.

  •  If all is well in my ultrasound next week (at 9w4d) I will be placing an order that day! I didn't know till recently that you could even buy home dopplers! (before my m/c in may, I hadn't been pregnant for a decade). I know for me it will be sanity-saving.
  • I got one this time around and when I got worried I would use it. It helped me a lot! Since I started to feel movements I dont use it. For me it helped get rid of my stressing out, which is not good for baby.

I have one and love it. I got it at 10 weeks and it took me about an hour the first time. It has gotten a lot easier over time. I just used it tonight at 14w6d and found it immediately. I use it once per week or if I am having a freak out moment. As PPs have said I wouldn't get one if not finding the HB on the first try will send you into a panic attack. Edited for spelling.
  • I am glad I got one. I've only been able to reliably find the HB in the last week but right now, it's such a long time in between OB visits that it really calms me down. But I don't let myself get too upset if I can't find it. My DH worries that I am pressing too hard to hear the HB and doesn't want me to do it very often. I keep telling him that I can't press that hard with the wand to hurt the baby but he worries nonetheless.
