Today I got mirena. The insertion was very painful. I did do research on mirena but I was wondering if you are or were on mirena....did/do you like it? Any side effects? How was your period after?
I've had mine for about 3 months now and I've had no side effects. I love not having to worry about pills or anything. My period has been pretty regular and heavy but my OB/GYN told me it will take awhile before it lightens or stops completely.
I had one before DD and got another at 8w PP. Insertion was painful (the first was horrible), but no side effects. We still occasionally BF, it did not hurt my supply at all.
Married 1/2/99.
TTC since 4/09.
Diagnosed PCOS. Diagnosed Hypothryoid 11/09.
SHG & SA normal. PCOS Research study started 5/10.
Clomid/Femara cycle #1 - 6/10 = BFN
Clomid/Femara cycle #2 - 7/10 = BFP #1 - Missed miscarriage 9/2/10
11/12 - BFP #2 - 11/22 - m/c
5/1/11 - BFP #3 - Pre-eclampsia, IUGR & bed rest from 32w. DD born via induction 1/4/12.
I had Skyla the three year version of Mirena. I spotted for about a week and then stopped bleeding. I only kept it in two months because it stabbed my husband's penis when we attempted sex and it didn't get better even though my (former) doctor told us to "persevere" and "avoid doing it doggy style" (yeah he actually said that!!!!)
ALSO, unrelated to your question but related to Skyla, I was unable to lose any weight while I had in implanted. As soon as it was removed I dropped 4 pounds. And I didn't connect this until it was removed, but when they put it in I had horrible back pain when I slept. I figured it was just "dealing with my post-baby body" or something, but as soon as it was remove the pain went away. Maybe IUDs work for some women but it really didn't work for me.
I got the Mirena 8 weeks ago, and have been spotting almost continuously since getting it inserted. I seem to have a period for a week or so, then spotting for another two-ish weeks. My OB/GYN said that it could take a few months for your body to adjust, and that 80% of women don't end up getting a period while they have the Mirena. I haven't had any other side effects, and love not having to worry about remembering to take a pill (the BC options are limited if breastfeeding).

interesting OB. Sounds like it didn't work for you for other reasons. But, did he bother to tell you it was the strings your SO was feeling? My dh swore my first IUD was stabbing him. It took a 5 min appt for dr to trim them back. I just asked current dr to cut them very short to avoid that problem all around. No reason to avoid an IUD if the rest works.
When I went to tell the OB about it, he said that if he cut the strings any shorter it would be difficult and painful to remove and recommended that we "persevere." We did that for another month but it was intolerable, so I switched OBs and had it removed. It just didn't work for me and us. I was on the pill before getting pregnant for years and never had any issues so I just went back on that.
