Our baby will be 6,5 months old at Christmas. We have him, 2 Labrador retrievers, and a 14-16hr drive for the holidays (depending on weather and traffic). If we drive, we have to bring our luggage, plus baby gear, dog stuff, and gifts. If we fly, we have to board the dogs and still deal with carting luggage, baby gear, and gifts on the flight. Our LO is pretty good in the car, but we've never done anything longer than a 3-4hr drive with him. We'd split the 14-16hrs into 2 days. We have 8 days off total. We can always ship gifts to our destination, but that doesn't solve bringing them back.
What would you do? I'm pretty sure this is a lose-lose situation and it will suck either way.

Re: drive or fly for holidays?
Is it at all possible to get a dog sitter? I know they are likely as much family as your baby is...but...well it would make things all the easier!!
I think aside from that I would drive. Without the dogs I would totally say fly but with dogs in the mix I would drive. Make it so you can sit in the back with baby...it helps make the drive sooooo much easier! As for gifts. Either ship them back or have people buy stuff that is easier to pack. We do Christmas 20hrs away...we sly we always manage to get the gifts pack in our luggage as people think ahead and know you have to get it back.
Though when we got married 20hrs away our good friends flew down...and they flew with a large blender they bought us. Then we flew it back home with us hahahaa...when they got there they handed it to us and were like, so we totally didn't think this through and should have just left it at your house back home. heehee
