We didn't move DS1 until he was a little over 3 and potty trained. I am planning to go the same route with DS2 as long as he doesn't start climbing out. I will likely cry the day that DS2 moves to a regular bed. Also, we skip the toddler bed step and go straight to a twin size bed....one less transition to deal with down the road.
DS is 20 months and I have no intention of moving him to a bed anytime soon! When he's dead set on climbing out of his crib and is trying is often, then we'll reevaluate.
This. We most likely won't move DS to a toddler bed until he's 2 1/2, almost 3.
We moved DS at 16 months because he was climbing out of his crib and just stopped sleeping well in his crib. He's a wild sleeper and just wanted more space I think. We didn't want to buy new furniture and decided to use what we already had, so he's in a full-size low platform bed with mesh toddler rails. He had no problem with the transition. But it is very unique to each child when that magic time is to make the move.
We switched our son to the "toddler bed" setup of the crib at about 11 months. He's now 19 months and has been sleeping in a twin since August with no issues. He actually sleeps better with all the room to stretch out!
Ds is 20 months and we just switched him this week. He has done amazing!! Sleeps longer!! Glad we did it now. I don't think he would have been ready sooner lol
DD is only 16 months but I was relieved to read that 2.5-3 is a reasonable age to make the switch! I don't want DD to have freedom to roam the house if we are sleeping - not safe. We'll see how it goes but I'm in no rush.

You could child proof the bedroom and put a gate up. That is what we did, and it has worked really well for us. It is great if you want to do any training because it creates that barrier to let them know they should stay in their room to stay safe.
