sleep update and food question

Last night we officially couldnt take it anymore and decided to let DS cry. The first time he woke up, he cried for 15 min and put himself back to sleep. The second time and 3rd time was 5 min each and he was back to bed. I couldnt believe it. May just have been a fluke and tonight might not be so easy, but I was happy anyway!

What are you guys giving LO for protein and iron? We were doing mostly purees until about a week ago and now have moved on to real food. My pedi said to give DS meat for iron, but we dont really eat red meat in our house so not sure what else to give him,. I guess I will make him meatballs (reg ones and not turkey meatballs) and maybe a hamburger? What else could I give him?

Re: sleep update and food question

  • Spinach is good for iron. Broccoli too I think. Protein can come from beans of all sorts.

  • I haven't tried meat balls yet. I will try this weekend. We tried chicken and baby didn't care for it too well. She loves broccoli though.

Beans!  Beans, beans, beans.  I make them plain for him, I put them in soups and stews, and I make "burgers" with them and give him just the "patty" cut into strips.  I don't eat any red meat, and DH and DS1 only eat it on rare occasion.  We are all about ground turkey and vegetarian meals :)
yeah this is us too. He had tummy issues when he was first born so beans make me nervous just bc i dont want it to affect his sleep from gas pains. but i know i need to try it. i made quinoa burgers the other night and have beans in there that i might let him try. probably my best bet!
  • Cheerios are fortified with iron.  My baby would eat them by the box if we let her (and sometimes we just about do).  Apparently fortified is easier for your body to get than natural.  Also, avoid iron-containing foods with calcium-containing, when you can, since calcium limits uptake.
  • DS isn't a huge fan of hamburgers but meatloaf went over pretty well with him.  You can slice and it and freeze it so you only have to take out a slice at a time to serve the baby.
