AW: NT scan/sex of baby

This morning we went to our NT scan.  When they were doing the blood work (before the ultrasound) she mentioned that we might be able to tell the sex today so think about if we want to know or not.  I was shocked, but wasn't holding out much hope since I'm 13 weeks!  As soon as she brought up the image, she knew what it was.  Most importantly, we are also very low risk for all the bad stuff!  I'm so relieved and excited!

Oh, and it's a GIRL!!  We are definitely naming her after DH's late mother, so her name will be Julia!

    Congrats!!

  • Congratulations! That is so exciting
  • Congrats! I've known lots of people find out the gender at the nt scan. And all have been right so far:) the nub theory seems to work well for people I know.

I've read that the nub theory is 75% accurate at 12 weeks at 95% accurate at 13 weeks. So there is still room for error but an experienced tech would probably have no problem being able to tell.

It's cool that she told you the sex, but I'd probably hold off on buying lots of pink (or at least keep tags on) for the next 7 weeks!  It's still really early to be able to tell for sure (though I guess it's possible) so it's not out of the question that you'll get a surprise at 20 weeks.
Yeah - for sure!  We won't do anything until the 20 week scan!  I won't be buying lots of pink anyway though! :)  We are also doing a gender neutral nursery, but we still won't start it until next year anyway!

She seemed absolutely sure!  I have no doubts!  (but yeah still too early to start getting ready anyway!)

  • So fun!! I wouldn't bet money on a 13 week gender but that's still awesome!!! Do you have pics you can post?!
  • Congrat's!  So exciting!  I'm having a scan at 13 weeks as well and am hoping to get an idea of the sex.  Praying that the baby will cooperate like yours :)

  • congrats!

I have a friend who is a sonographer, so I am hoping she can take a guess when we have our NT scan. She says that most of the time she can be 99% sure of what it is.

I also have another friend who did an elective at 16 weeks, was told girl, did a gender reveal with family, had the a/s at 19 weeks and was told it was a boy.

That happened to me they told me girl then boy. My dr said that's why they normally don't tell you the sex until the 19 week as because boys can be mistaken for girls early on.

OP congrats on a good scan.

I've wanted to do an elective u/s, but I get nervous, so I will probably just wait until the a/s.

You'd think it would be more common to mistake a girl for a boy. At 12 weeks the external parts look extremely similar and much more boy IMO. At this point it's all about "the angle of the dangle".

I think it's because sometimes the "boy" parts don't fully extend out until later (if I remember correctly). If you look at a cervix it looks like a penis but in a girl it goes in and boy it extends. I saw a cool diagram of boy and girl parts and how they look just a like starting off and how they become how they look in the end. It was
    kinda cool.

ETA: I totally misread what you said. Lol I gotta go to bed but I think if I remember correctly the diagram both looked like girls in the beginning. I need to find it. I saw it on TTGP.

Here's the one I've seen. But I guess where the look similar is listed as 11 weeks. Either way it's pretty interesting stuff!
