What is everyone getting? STMs, what do you find important/necessary? I have a family member wanting to spend a lot on a gift and was thinking of getting a "cadillac" of baby monitors, but after some research, I'm not even sure what that is...
I'm thinking a video/internet monitor is the way to go these days. DH and I both have iPhones and we have one iPad. It seems like it'd be convenient to buy a monitor that has an app we can download on our devices, but I also think it's important to have a monitor devoted to being a monitor. (with the phones, you have to be in the actual app to see/hear the baby, right? So no multi-tasking). Many of the video monitors I've checked out with internet/smart phone compatibility do NOT offer night vision. How important is the night vision? Can we rely on noise in the dark?
The summer brand is releasing 2 new internet/video monitors next month in the $250-300 price range. Here is some info on them:
https://www.summerinfant.com/monitoring/internet "Baby Touch" and "Baby Zoom" systems. I do not believe either has night vision.
Can anyone help me clarify these thoughts? Am I over-analyzing or missing something? Thanks so much!
ETA: Ok, I lied! Both new monitors from summer have LED technology to see baby at night.
Re: Can we talk about baby monitors?
1. Being able to see DS - so video was a must
2. Ability to control camera from handheld monitor
3. Night Vision - the Baby Touch does have this
4. Ability to speak to DS through monitor - this has bought me extended nap time on many an occasion. Sometimes DS pops up an hour early into his 2 hour nap. If I tell him through the monitor to lay back down, he will. If I were to go in there it would be game over. Also, H and I have used that function to speak to each other when one was in the room putting DS to bed and the other was downstairs.
After looking closer, both those new monitors offer "nightvision", but they call it "infrared LEDs", so I was looking for the wrong wording. Does your unit work with your smartphones? I'm not sure we'd always use it with them, but seems nice to be able to access from the phone.

I just checked into these. Is this because of the motion sensor pad? I had never heard of these! Geez... all these possible features!! Doesn't look like they offer the smartphone viewing. Thanks for the info!

I was interested in the Angel Care Monitors with the motion detection pads for SIDS until I read many of the reviews with people complaining that the sensor would go off too often and send them sprinting to the baby's room in a panic every few days or so.
I'm not 100% that I'll need it yet, but I decided to put a Snuza Halo movement monitor on my registry instead and plan to get the Summer Infant Baby Touch monitor to go with it. The Snuza monitor has better reviews for preventing false alarms and has a vibrate function it initiate to gently rouse the baby before it goes to alarm mode. It still has a chance for false alarms, but I read only a few incidents of that. It clips on to the baby's diaper so it can also work for bed sharing or other sleeping situation if you're into that sort of thing. The Snuza is about $100 and the Summer Infant video monitor is $195 on my Amazon registry.

Maru!
We have a regular summer infant monitor for DS because we lived in an apartment and there was no need for video when we were so close to him.
Now we live in a house and I wanted a color video monitor this go around. We ended up buying a Motorola one at BRU 2 months ago that comes with 2 cameras and have already been using the one fore DS. I love it!!!

It's super fancy and ridiculously expensive, but I could see so many benefits to using it. There are two drawbacks to me:
1. It's new so there are no reviews
2. We don't have Smartphones and it says you can use any device, but I don't know if you can use it for monitoring that way or just to track the data.
This time around I am looking at the Vtech Safe n Sound or another with 2 cameras because I will have 2 LOs sharing a room.
