continuing holiday traditions

sorry if this has already been discussed.

Do you have any Holiday traditions you did as a kid that you will continue with your LO/Family?
Any new ones?

We started with the new pjs and a book last year (my family Christmas tradition as a kid) and now im thinking about this year... maybe adding something to it...
Last year we cut a slab of the trunk of our tree to make an ornament for the tree this year out of it. We never got around to decorating it, so I was thinking this year we will decorate that slab and at the end of Christmas cut another slab off this tree and decorate that slab as an ornament for the next year...

Looking for ideas. TIA!

Re: continuing holiday traditions

  • We will do PJ's and a book for Christmas Eve as well. Maybe a cup for hot chocolate eventually.

I already bought her a Santa plate and cup for cookies and milk to leave out. We will also go out and sprinkle Reindeer Food on the front steps (granola and glitter). My aunt used to do this with my cousins and I thought it was so cute. Mom and dad clean up as much as they can after bedtime.

Every year she gets her own personalized ornament, but I will also use her Christmas picture to make an ornament with the year on it.

  • One other one that is pre-Christmas, but my family and I designate an entire weekend as "Cookie Weekend" and have a huge baking marathon. It's exhausting, but so much fun. We've done this for as long as I can remember. I am really looking forward to when DD is old enough to participate. I always had a blast. And then when she's older she can pick out her own new cookie recipe to try out and we'll add them to the list every year.

I always thought glitter and oatmeal was the reindeer poop haha Maybe I will do the granola and glitter as reindeer food because that is much cuter! Who wants poop in their house even if its from Rudolph? ;-)

We do new pjs Christmas eve, cookies and milk, 25 books wrapped under the tree (most will be from the library until we accumulate enough!) and then the ornament each year. I love Christmas traditions so Im excited to read the responses!

Edited to add - we dont have a fireplace so I was thinking a tradition of leaving Santa a key with a note would be neat.

  • My mom did Christmas pjs for us as the only gift we opened on Christmas Eve, then it changed into a Thanksgiving gift so we could wear them all December since they were Christmas themed pjs. I bought the boys Christmas pjs every year so far but haven't done it as a gift so I guess that is one I'm not doing yet but might when they get older.

We do a new ornament when we put up the tree. Something that commemorates the year.

My mom does a wrapped up Christmas theme book for us to unwrap and read every night. She still has all the books and said she will give a bunch for our house and keep some at her house for the nights we are there.

Christmas Eve candle lit service was another tradition we are continuing with our family.

Somethings we have started: we do an evening at a resort hotel in Nashville that has a big Christmas display and Santa land. We don't spend the night, just walk around, see Santa and all the lights, and have dinner.  We also started a tradition of going to look at Christmas lights on Christmas Eve Eve.

  • My H's family picks a family that is going through a tough time from their church and leaves them presents on their porch. When my H was really little his parents were super poor and someone did this for them, so now that they can afford it they do it for another family. I really love this and want to started doing it. We don't go to church, but my H is in the Army and there are a lot of soldiers, especially young ones, who have young kids and not enough money for basic things. We've always done the Christmas angel tree thing but I like that this is a little more personal.

We also do a special ornament every year. I want to start doing PJs and a book on Christmas Eve. We always do one gift that night but it was never anything specific, I like the idea of something specific.

MH's family does PJs on Christmas eve, MIL still buys them for us when were up there.  I have some awesome flannel numbers.
Last time we were there BIL told MIL she wasn't getting anymore grandchildren if she kept buying SIL and I full coverage flannel jammies. I was PG with Beb, just didn't know it. :P
We bought her and Auggs Christmas Eve jammies last year but will be going to MILs this year so we'll let her do the honors.
H & I have been doing a Christmas Eve ornament for each other since our first Christmas so we will continue to do that.
This year I am going to cheat and buy everyone's ornament (Alice in Wonderland, Queen of Hearts, Mad Hatter and White Rabbit) a throw back to her birthday party.

  • Just saw another cute idea on Pinterest and I thought I would share with you ladies!

Magic Elf Seeds: take a bowl of sugar and bury a few red and green tic tacs as "seeds." Leave a note and ask the elves to work their magic. Replace the tic tacs with mini candy canes standing up in the sugar and sprinkle some glitter over all.

  • What we've talked about is doing PJ's and a new ornament on Thanksgiving night or the day after, since that's when we usually decorate the tree.  Christmas music playing, fireplace on, and baking sugar cookies while we decorate the tree.  My parents get us ornaments every year, but don't have a specific date that we get them necessarily.  We do Christmas Eve at my parent's house and everything will be from them, and then at our house there will be one or two bigger presents already put together from Santa.  We didn't do any of these things growing up, but I'm a little obsessed with starting traditions for DD since we essentially had none.
