So I had my 37 week appointment yesterday with my OB. He looked a little worried when he walked into the room, but I just figured it was because I was his first appointment after lunch and he was running late from a delivery over lunch time.
He sits down and asks if I knew I had "anti-k antibodies." I am a nurse, but quite frankly, had never heard of such a thing. Apparently they showed up on my prenatal bloodwork back in MAY and he is just "seeing" this information now.
Basically, anti-k antibodies can cause the baby to become anemic in-utero, and could possibly have required inter uterine transfusions. I should have been marked high-risk from the beginning and have had my bloodwork done every 2-4 weeks to check to make sure my levels weren't rising including specialized weekly ultrasounds of the baby and fetal blood testing.
Obviously none of this happened. I am quite disappointed, especially after reading up on the anti-k antibodies. It is a serious concern and can cause second or even third trimester loss. I am very thankful that I can feel baby girl move all day, everyday, but part of me is angry at the fact that this also could have caused us to lose our baby.
I am waiting on my bloodwork to see what happens next. At this point, if my levels are high, I'll most likely be induced and baby will have to have a transfusion right away. Keeping my fingers crossed that everything will end up ok.
**update - OB called tonight. My bloodwork came back NEGATIVE for the antibodies. He said I most likely did contract them from my transfusions last year, but they didn't "stick" in my body. Such a HUGE relief

Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers today ladies. This baby girl can keep inside for a few weeks longer.
Re: *update* Not the way I wanted my OB appointment to go...
It's very disheartening, especially as my OB is the chief of OB at the hospital, and a very well regarded physician in my community. Sigh.

The odd thing is, is that I always ask to see my bloodwork results, and actually have a printout of all my prenatal bloodwork results... And there is nothing mentioned on any of it. I dug it out this morning to check, and nothing.
So stressful waiting for results to come in - hoping we will hear something by the end of the day tomorrow at the latest!
Thanks for all the T&P ladies. I will update when I hear something.
When they do the prenatal bloodwork they screen for your blood type, and rh factor. Any antibodies you have will also show up with this. They won't typically just screen for anti-k, but will screen for any antibodies you have in your blood.
I had a repeat blood screen done yesterday to double check. Just waiting on the results.
