Pregnant after 35

Intro and question please

Hi ladies, just recently got my positive for baby #2. I am 38, and my ob is just treating me as "normal"...i.e. not of "advanced maternal age". I expected otherwise so I am surprised. Is this common? Is it a good thing or a bad thing? I love my ob and was very happy with my pregnancy & birth of my son so I am not looking to change or anything. Just curious. I think I was looking forward to some extra care or something, like a reward for being old! Thanks and hello!

Re: Intro and question please

  • Hi! Congratulations and nice to meet you! I don't really know the answer to your question about whether you should be treated differently, but I will say I am encountering the same thing. I am 39 and 13 wks pregnant w/#3. Other than being offered the regular testing, I haven't been treated any differently. Which I have to say is a relief! I heard a news segment last night about the increasing success rate for "geriatric" (isn't that an awful label?)--about 80%. It also said that women over 35 tend to be, in many cases, just as if not more healthy than younger women, so the concerns are fading somewhat. Hope all goes well! :)

  • Thank you and I am glad to know it may be more a shift in thought than just me feeling left out or something. I mean I realize everyone is different and in some ways 35 was just where someone decided to draw a line in the sand. I also realized after posting, I hope what I said did not come off as offensive. I realize there can be some very serious concerns being pregnant later in life and was not trying to make light of that or be insensitive to it.

  • No! Definitely not offensive! The news story I mentioned said that the 35 thing comes from a 200 yr old study. So our culture latched onat one time and went from there. But if you have concerns or feel like you want more care, you could always ask your doctor. There might be things you could take advantage of that address being pregnant over 35. And I guess all doctors are different--mine views it as no big deal, but others might be more cautious. But good luck again, and I am new to these groups but they seem to be very supportive and tolerant of any and every question and concern. :P
  • I am a week away from my due date with #2 and I haven't been treated any differently than anyone else.  I was just offered more testing.  I still haven't even been offered a non-stress test which for some becomes standard once you start weekly visits.  I like not being treated like a piece of glass that is going to break.  I trust my Drs whole heartedly and know they have my best interest at heart and that of my babies so I am ok with their relaxed approach to my old age pregnancy lol :)

  • My dr does approach certain things differently due to my AMA but not in an overly cautious or alarming fashion. As pp stated it just depends on the doctor, some are completely focused on your age and some are more laid back. I'm sure if there is anything needing to be addressed your dr will make sure you are taken care of. Congrats on your pregnancy!

  • I'm not treated differently for AMA at all. Could just be that in Chicago they see a lot of us. My practice group didn't blink an eye and they say I am just as healthy as younger women. They do watch me closely for my high blood pressure tho and I was told that is the only reason I am considered high risk.
