S/O Bedtimes

Just curious, when does your LO go to sleep at night and how did you arrive at set bedtime?

DS goes down between 6:45-7pm depending on when his afternoon nap ended. We didn't really do anything to make this bedtime - he's always dictated it. As a newborn it was around 9:30, when he got a little older it was between 7:30-8 and then when naps began to consolidate a little more he made it to our current bedtime.

Re: S/O Bedtimes

  • We never dictated either, he just started getting super tired between 8-9. So when we see him rub his eyes and start to crab, we get the last bottle in and off to bed.

  • Most of the time, DD goes to bed around 7:30. On Sunday evenings I often have responsibilities at church which only ends at 8:00, and in that case she doesn't get to bed till closer to 8:30.

When she was still taking 3 naps a day bedtime used to be 8-8:30. Now that she cut one of her naps out, it's earlier because she's often up around 3:00, so by 7:30 she's ready for bed. We've never forced any bedtime on her, we just let her figure it out and followed her cues.

  • Bedtime has consistently been between 6:45-7:30 for a couple months. DS can now go with up to 4-4.25 hours of wake time from last nap to bedtime if he has had two good naps that day. He goes 3 hours between the two naps. If the second nap is short, we keep it to 3.5 hours from last nap to bedtime.

My ideal time is when it falls about 7, because I feel like I get some time to put the house back together and get ready for the next day. When it falls as "late" as 7:30, I crash myself about an hour later, so I feel sort of harried to clean up and get things done before I run out of steam. Bedtime has always been dictated by last naps. In the summer when he wake time was much less, sometimes it was as early as 6:15.

  • Somewhere in the 8 o'clock hour. That's just what time we finish dinner , cleaning, baths, and all the evening stuff. It was just easier with 2 for me to do everything for bedtime with them together. Although now she doesn't wake up until closer to 10 in the mornings. Then takes a 3 hour nap at around noon. So her evening nap is too late and she ends up not taking but 1 long nap. Now she is getting sleepy earlier. So I think we might be bumping her up to 7:30.

  • 6:30ish. I follow his cues. Sometimes we're out later for one reason or another and he goes to bed later than this and he sleeps worse. It's not bad enough that it makes me never want to do anything that requires keeping him up past his bedtime, but it's noticeable. He's a happy camper if he's asleep by 6:30. If his naps are short, I'll make sure he's in bed by 6.
  • Bedtime routine starts at 6:30. This was set by sleep training

  • Anytime between 6-7. It really depends when his last nap ended and how fussy he is as we get to that hour. Routine can start anytime in that hour. He seems to have set it himself... It used to be between 7-8, but he was pretty inconsolable during the routine when we had it pushed that far back.

  • I try to get her in her crib by 8:30. If she stays up any later she gets super cranky and if she goes to bed any later, she gets up at 5 in the morning.

  • Lo dictated his bedtime too. He goes down between 6-6:30. Even if his last nap is late, he wants that bedtime.

What kind of training did you do? How is it working out?

  • We put both girls down about 7, sometimes a bit earlier for DD2, sometimes a bit later for DD1. DD2 has consolidated down to one nap (!!?? What the heck??) in the past 3ish weeks, and if that nap is short, then I'lll put her down as early as 6:15. But 2 days ago she only slept for one hour and still made it to about 6:45 before she started showing sleepy cues. I, on the other hand, had been showing sleepy cues for hours. Unfortunately, no one pays any attention to mine. :(

    Aww Kelly I'm sorry! :-(

I was just reading that some babies at this age consolidate to one nap. I thought it was surprising too!

  • All this talk about 1 nap is giving me anxiety. Please, no. Not yet! I need her to keep her 2 naps! Haha.

DD1 consolidated to one nap when she was about 14 or 15 months old, so for DD2 I was expecting at least a few more months of 2 naps. She went pretty quickly from 3 naps to 1, though.
And DD1 is 31 months and doesn't nap at all at least once a week. I'm really not ready for her to drop her naps altogether! I think we'll have to keep up with a "quiet time" period even if she doesn't sleep.

Honestly, going to 1 nap was the best thing for DS1, and hopefully will be like that for DS2 as well.  BUT both of my boys are/were only 30-45 min nappers when they have more than 1 nap.  Once we consolidated to 1, DS1 started taking 2-3 hr naps.  It was heavenly.

    Anniversary

  • We are on the later end....between 9 and 10. Usually closer to 9, or at least that is the goal. She gets up around 9. I stay home and my dh does not get in from work until after 7 so this works for us. The times she has gone down earlier she always wakes up ready to play after an hour or so, like a nap. And I don't want her up any earlier, I need the early morning time baby free :) She naps great and is happy. If things change we will reevaluate. We have a very short bedtime routine so that helps.

We are so thankful that our second daughter, Lillian Elizabeth "Lily", was born healthy and happy on February 11, 2013.  We love her to pieces.

We lost our first daughter, Hannah Grace on May 4, 2011.  She was buried on May 14 during a beautiful service at my home church. We are grateful that if she could not be here with us, that she is healed and whole with the Lord. We look forward to the day when we will get to meet her. We love her so much.

I can see that happening with my little guy too. We were on 4 and then 3 short naps for so long. Now we have one short, one long, and I imagine when he's at one nap it will be one longer nap. I'll take it!
