*update* Not the way I wanted my OB appointment to go...

So I had my 37 week appointment yesterday with my OB. He looked a little worried when he walked into the room, but I just figured it was because I was his first appointment after lunch and he was running late from a delivery over lunch time.

He sits down and asks if I knew I had "anti-k antibodies." I am a nurse, but quite frankly, had never heard of such a thing. Apparently they showed up on my prenatal bloodwork back in MAY and he is just "seeing" this information now.

Basically, anti-k antibodies can cause the baby to become anemic in-utero, and could possibly have required inter uterine transfusions. I should have been marked high-risk from the beginning and have had my bloodwork done every 2-4 weeks to check to make sure my levels weren't rising including specialized weekly ultrasounds of the baby and fetal blood testing.

Obviously none of this happened. I am quite disappointed, especially after reading up on the anti-k antibodies. It is a serious concern and can cause second or even third trimester loss. I am very thankful that I can feel baby girl move all day, everyday, but part of me is angry at the fact that this also could have caused us to lose our baby.

I am waiting on my bloodwork to see what happens next. At this point, if my levels are high, I'll most likely be induced and baby will have to have a transfusion right away. Keeping my fingers crossed that everything will end up ok.

**update - OB called tonight. My bloodwork came back NEGATIVE for the antibodies. He said I most likely did contract them from my transfusions last year, but they didn't "stick" in my body. Such a HUGE relief :):)
Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers today ladies. This baby girl can keep inside for a few weeks longer. :)

  • This is horrible!  We trust our providers to 'catch' things like this, and I can only imagine how disheartening it must be to find out they didn't see this information before.  I'm so glad that LO is okay and I will keep  you in my prayers!

  • Woah. I can't believe your OB missed that. I've never heard of it but it seems serious based on your post. Are you anemic too?

I am anemic myself. And before we conceived I had to receive multiple transfusions as I was losing too much blood, which may be where I contracted this anti-body from.

It's very disheartening, especially as my OB is the chief of OB at the hospital, and a very well regarded physician in my community. Sigh.
  • Wow you seem very calm. I'd be flipping out on my dr if she missed that. Sending lots of T&P'S that your lo is just fine and this won't cause any issues.

  • That's ridiculous! I'm so sorry your dealing with this but am hoping things work out fine and baby girl gets to stay in there.

  • Just awful... I hope everything turns out to be ok!!

  • If I would have known what I've researched about the topic at my appointment, I don't think I would have been so calm. Baby girl is very active, so knowing that she's still there and kicking (no pun intended) puts my mind at ease the slightest bit ... If I don't keep calm, I'm afraid my BP will rise, and cause a whole new slew of problems. At this point, if she has to come out, at least she is full term. Trying to keep positive I guess. :)
  • I would be so heartbroken/upset with my doctor/nervous all at once. Stay strong and I hope everything comes out ok with the blood work! Really hope you and LO are doing ok!

  • That is terrible. Lawsuit-worthy IMO. I would document everything from this point forward
  • Omg, that's horrible. FX for good results! :(
  • Well T&P for you they everything turns out good and you have a healthy baby. And then maybe you can look at the situation as if they saved you lots of stress instead of what could have happened. Still crazy your OB didn't catch that til now though.
  • Wow. At least everything up to this point has been alright, and you have a plan moving forward.

  • I would be very upset! Was your OB apologetic? I'm so sorry that you are just finding out now. As some of the other people said, maybe this just helped you not to worry by not knowing. I will keep my fingers crossed that all is well.

  • Wow.  Hope everything's alright with you both.

  • Seems like somebody in that doctors office dropped the damn ball. Hope everything is alright with you two.
  • @kate14 - he was more surprised himself that he was just seeing the result now, not so apologetic.

The odd thing is, is that I always ask to see my bloodwork results, and actually have a printout of all my prenatal bloodwork results... And there is nothing mentioned on any of it. I dug it out this morning to check, and nothing.

So stressful waiting for results to come in - hoping we will hear something by the end of the day tomorrow at the latest!

Thanks for all the T&P ladies. I will update when I hear something.
  • Maybe it's a mistake (error in report or not your report). Why would they even check for this? It's not typically something you screen for in prenatal lab work. Are they doing a repeat test to make sure?
  • Wow, that's unbelievable, I'm so sorry.  I hope going forward things are better taken of for you and your LO!

I'm really hoping its a mistake somewhere to be honest.

When they do the prenatal bloodwork they screen for your blood type, and rh factor. Any antibodies you have will also show up with this. They won't typically just screen for anti-k, but will screen for any antibodies you have in your blood.

I had a repeat blood screen done yesterday to double check. Just waiting on the results.

  • Keep us updated.
  • Oh wow! Hope everything is ok!
