Babies on the Brain

Initially confused. Now confused, and waiting.

I recently got off BC in August, in preparation for trying to start a family in the future - likely in the next 6 months or so. In the meantime, my husband and I have been using good old fashion condoms, and everything was going well. On Friday, November 1st, one day after my finished period (and day 8 of my cycle), we "chanced" it. I thought nothing of it because of the fact that I had just finished my period, and how could I possibly be ovulating so early, etc. That following Monday, November 4th, I got a terrible migraine (pretty unusual timing for a migraine, although I do get them occasionally), and went to bed early and exhausted. The next few days I started getting some odd cramping. Very low, not in usual areas near my ovaries around period time. I noticed my hips hurting often, and I just found it odd. I also had some slight nausea, but again, with pregnancy not really on my mind, I chalked it up to a change in diet (eating particularly healthy that week). Finally, on Saturday, November 9th, I went to the bathroom, and noticed the oddest white, almost chunky discharge. This is when a lightbulb finally went on, and I started questioning things. Today, is Wednesday, November 13th - so approximately day 20 in my cycle. I've noticed a frequency in urination, light headedness, bloating, and continued cramping and fullness - similar to gas, but without the gas. My breasts do not hurt, but my nipples are sensitive, and I have no clue if they look different at all.

I think the soonest I can take a pregnancy test would be first thing in the morning on Friday, November 22nd, so I'm waiting until then. If not pregnancy, one thing I was considering is that this might just be a really strong ovulation? In truthfulness, it's been so long since I've been off of birth control, and with only being off of it a few months, it's hard for me to reference my past experiences.

Has anyone else had similar issues? Anyone get pregnant nearly immediately after your period ended?

Any comments and shared experiences would be helpful. Until then, I am confused, and waiting. Thanks!

It's really normal to have lots of symptoms like you're describing in the first 3-6 months coming off birth control as your hormones adjust to the lack of birth control. I had those same symptoms you describe in the months coming off birth control (outside of that first cycle)--funny enough when i was really pregnant i had no symptoms at all.I wouldn't chalk it up to pregnancy. Thick white discharge is common at the beginning or end of your cycle and is not linked to ovulation or implantation. The probability that you ovulated on cd11 and a baby has been implanted for long enough to give you very noticeable pregnancy symptoms on cd20 is slim.

  • Thanks! I appreciate the thoughtful response. It's been a confusing couple of weeks :-/
  • If you have been off birth control since August, have your cycles returned with regularity? Do you have any idea when you usually ovulate (BBT charting, fertility awareness, etc.)? This would be helpful.

The first 6 months or so after coming off the pill can be crazy because your body is working to regulate your hormones. It is possible this made you ovulate very early. It is also possible that what you are feeling are just affects of being off birth control. If I had to guess based on your symptoms I would think this is just hormones regulating and not pregnancy.

The best thing you can do is take a deep breath and take care of yourself. Don't go out drinking or doing things you wouldn't do if you were ttc, but also don't worry yourself to death. It is very unlikely you ovulated that early in your cycle, but still possible. Worst possible scenario - you are pregnant a mere 6 months before you planned. 6 months is not going to drastically change your life, and sometimes it is better that life happens this way instead of you being in control.

  • Okay sorry - you should totally get smash faced drunk for the next few weeks until you find out if you are pregnant or not. This will help you chill-ax. Good plan.

The placenta kicks in around the 5 or 6 week mark and before then baby doesn't get nutrients from the mother... If you had no idea you were pregnant and were drinking heavily, the doctor is just going to say basically "what's done is done" and not to worry. What else can you do at that point? If you had no idea you were pregnant, then fine. But in this case when you think you could be or if you were trying, I think you would be really hard pressed to find a doctor that encourages drinking during that time. It's your baby though, you get to decide what you are comfortable with.

Uh, I'd say the majority of people drink while ttc--go poll the ttgp board and you'll see. I've never heard of an ob recommending complete abstinence of alcohol. I don't think anyone should get blackout drunk regardless if they're ttc or not. You can continue to live your life normally with the exception if your normal consists of shooting up heroin. There's this too-- https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1142486/

  • CraftyKola you need to chill ax. You spew a lot of garbage on the boards. Maybe it's time for you to pick up a book and learn a little.

Answering the OPs question and including advice is garbage? Interesting. Some people choose to "drink until it's pink", but others don't. Personal choice. She wasn't bashing anyone for their choice.

  • Thanks, everyone! All of this information was incredibly helpful. I am definitely going to start charting my temp so I have a better idea of when I'm ovulating. With regard to one of the questions above, my period did return to normal pretty rapidly. I'd say I'm between 29-31 days on average between cycles. It's very possible that I'm freaked out by my own ovulation, having not ovulated in so many years. I really do appreciate all of your information. I had been doing research online for a few days, but it's always better to hear personal experiences.
