New to OPK's

I got the test strips to help take away some of the guessing work but really have no clue what I am doing. Also need to RELAX. Having issues relaxing. Any insights on your experiences (what worked did/did not work, what day of your cycle you started on) with OPK's would be very much appreciated.

  • I am thinking I wasted my money :(

  • Thank you ladies!
Best of luck to all of you!!

  • I don't think I will use them-too embarrassed to take them back though LOL

  • You bought them, might as well try them out. A lot of people use them along side if temping. Good luck!

  • I may just get the digital test because I don't have a cup to put urine in. :-/

  • You could probably save some money and just buy dixie cups instead while you're in the store that sells the digital test. They are pretty cheap and hold urine ; )

I never used them.  My OB says they're a waste of money and I'm lazy.

I personally found I was more relaxed when I didn't try to time things and just acted normally and didn't use BC.  I also got pregnant faster that way.

This is my hope this time around...
Give it a try!  I went nuts trying to time and plan the first time for 11 months and got nowhere. The month I gave up and just had sex when I felt like it, I got KU.  This time I never did anything but go off the pill and was KU cycle 3!

I'm so glad to hear this! I have been lurking on the boards on the bump for a few weeks. I have to admit I have been feeling overwhelmed by all the insistence on temping, or OPKs, or other tests. It sounds so complicated :-S

H and I aren't planning to start trying until the spring. My thought was to start out by just keeping track of when I get AF (mostly for convenience and being prepared for AF's arrival) and enjoying the baby dance fun with H for the first few months.

  • If you bought them, you obviously should just try them. I think temp charting is much more convenient and cheaper. If you aren't going to use them, I don't understand why it would be embarrassing to take them back. You are an adult. Trying to be a mother. This is not a big deal.

You can use any cup. I mean, I wouldn't use one you usually use for drinking but honestly there is nothing wrong with doing that. Urine is sterile and as long as it is glass, it is not porous and will all wash out. I wouldn't use plastic if you plan to ever reuse. Dixie cups are fine too but wasteful as they are waxed paper.

I have a small glass container in my bathroom that is solely used for non-drinking purposes. Birth control tests, sometimes I will use it to soak my rings in to clean them, etc. You just rinse it out.

If you find rinsing pee out of a cup to be complete gross, you might want to rethink this baby business ;)
  • I have no idea why I typed birth control tests... I meant pregnancy tests. I need to wake up. :)

Thank you so much for posting this!

I find the whole concept a little overwhelming. I asked a question on a previous board and the first question I got was someone asking me if I am using OPKs and temp tracking.

I am new to all this and just kind of hoped things would happen. Didn't know I had to track everything in order to make things happen.

After reading a lot of the boards, and all you lovely ladies, may try another cycle or two without any scientific interference. AF arrived this morning. After this, we'll only be on cycle 2. Don't feel a rush. It'll happen when it happens.

Again, thank you for the post. I had the exact same question!
I am not using ANYTHING for 3 months and then if we are not pregnant by March we will discuss OPK's. Just wing it! Like my husband said-people got pregnant just fine without OPK's and all they have now. (not harping on those who have may have fertility problems). Good luck!

  • I will however be using the ovulation calendar on the bump or other website to help me figure out when I ovulate. :)

  • Whether to use an OPK or not is a personal choice.  For me, the first time I tried to get pregnant, my DH and I tried for months, just "winging it".  The first time I used an OPK, I got pregnant.  So, I'm glad I did it.  They were easy to use.  They came with a cup for the urine.  They gave me an idea of when to step up the BDing!

I've been using an OPK for two months this time.  No BFP first time, in the TWW right now for the second time.
  • I may change my mind as we get closer to TTC.

  • @luvmygirls22

Fertilityfriend.com tracks it all and tells you the day you ovulated on based on temps

It's not that you HAVE to temp or use OPKs in order to get pregnant, obviously many people get pregnant without. These just help you time sex during your fertile window. And the reason people ask if you temp when you ask a question is that really, temping, etc. is really the only way to know what's going on with your body, so it's hard to give advice or troubleshoot without the info.

For example, whem someone asks why they are still getting neg HPTs even though their period is "late", the most probable cause is that they ovulated later than they think, but no one would know unless you're tracking your temp. Without more info, it's hard for us to give advice or help and it's totally speculation/guessing, which really isn't all that helpful.

If not tracking these things is not your style, that's totally fine. But many people find if they don't get pregnant in the first few months, they wish they had started in the beginning. It's totally up to you though.
