Paci advice

I EBF and only have 2 weeks left on maternity leave waahhhh. When Amelia gets upset she likes to be on the boob, so the last few weeks I have been trying to give her a pacifier so she can have that when I am at work. She hates them, have tried a bunch, soothies, avent, etc.

Could it be that it is me giving her the paci? She has been successfully taking bottlea from DH. Below is her paci face. Not impressed!

Re: Paci advice

  • She may just not like them. My 3DD hated them with a passion.

  • Ironically I didn't want to give her one but now I am concerned about her being consoled while I am not with her. Im sure I hold myself in far too high esteem and she will be perfectly fine lol!
  • My DD hates them too. She rarely ever takes one from me, but will occasionally from others. They have to hold it/ keep trying for awhile though.

  • You can try finger pacis. I find she prefers my pinky over a paci. But now we've worked at it and she'll take a paci for small periods of time.

  • My dd won't take one either. I've only tried soothie and mam. DS never took one either. I never really forced them but I did try. I was not going to buy any either but I ebf and she likes to use my boob as her pacifier too!!
  • Same here. The lovely orange one we were given at the hospital works the best...maybe 3-5 minutes. I'm torn in how I feel about pacifiers, anyway. On one hand, I want him to be able to be soothed by something other than my boob (sore sore nipples!). On the other hand, I'm not crazy for teaching him to need a pacifier for consolation.

  • She will take my pinkie and chows down on it like her life depends on it, so I suppose that'sbetter than nothing!

  • However, try aiming it at the roof of her mouth, rather than straight in. A nurse told my husband that, and it has helped.
    That's good to know...
  • My son loves his paci but wants nothing to do with it when he's upset. He only takes it when he's sleepy. Then spits it out before falling asleep.

  • Our won't take any except the MAM ones. He took the soothie in the hospital but won't since we've been home.

  • I'd try putting drops of breast milk on the top of the paci and quickly switxhing it out for your boob while she's comfort nursing and getting drowsy but is still awake. maybe it will help her get used to the texture and feel of it so then she'll take it freely? just a thought..
  • Dd and DS only took Nuk brand. Also I would give it you your h to try.

Same here.  I actually really like the Nuks because they have that little lip on them that help keep them from falling out when LO gets drowsy and starts to relax, but hasn't completely fallen asleep yet to forget about it.

  • MAM Smart pacifiers are incredible! Mine hated all pacis but this one was orthodontist approved and has a no slip silicon nipple so it doesn't fall out as easily, and it comes in a box that you can add water to and sterilize them in a microwave. They are lightweight and fit perfectly on their little faces. Love love love them!

DS1 loved the MAM ones. That's all he would use. He likes the clear rubber not the brown runner ones.

DS2 is not interested in a pacifier. I've tried the MAM, Avent, Dr Browns, and gumdrop.

  • My sister gave her a paci over the weekend and it was the longest she took it. My dad reinforced it afterwards. Since then, she's been taking it when I give it to her. It does fall out of her mouth a lot so it's soothing, but also a pain. So maybe have someone else give it a shot for a bit.

  • DS never took one and it looks like DD probably won't either. I think it's pretty normal with EBF babies. My honest opinion is babies usually need something if they are crying, so I'd rather figure out what is wrong and fix that to stop the crying rather than shoving a paci in her mouth (although I do know some babies do just like to suck and sure pacis may be useful then, but I think the majority of the time something else should be done). Both my niece and nephew had pacis past the age of three because they were so attached, so I'm kid of thankful we don't have to deal with the paci weaning either.

Anyway, long story short, my advice is to not worry about the paci, LO can be consoled other ways (rocking, holding, etc) and not taking a paci won't be the end of the world.

  • Baby hates them. She will suck and realize there is no milk and get pissed!
  • Ds1 never took one, ds2 likes mam ones!
  • We tried all different kinds but the only one she'll take is a no name brand from Walmart. She only takes it after her bottle at night 5-10 minutes then spits it out.

  • Our son will only take a MAM pacifier too. We've tried the NUK and avent with no luck.
