Stupid Hives go away and stay away already!!! VERY LONG SORRY

I just needed to vent I am at my wits end over these stupid hives. I just feel like a horrible mother bc I can not figure out what is causing them or how to make it stop.  I had posted around Halloween my Lo had his 6 month shots/flu shot and then a few days later broke out in horrible hives all over his body. I took him to urgent care and they said no I dont think its the shots must be a new food you introduced. THey gave us some med to control the hives and sent us on our way and said to stop feeding him the newest food we had been doing (peaches). So i stopped giving him the peaches and the hives went away and stayed away.

Last Wed, I get a call from daycare that he has a fever of 101.5 and I need to pick him up.  I go and get him and give him tyelnol and he still seems his happy self.  His temp went down and Thurs he was fever free. Friday I get him up and he has the horrible hives again but this time just in his diaper area and legs.  He has no fever so I bring him to daycare and explain what is going on and that Ill try and get him into see the doc.  She calls me an hour later saying his temp has gone back to 100 but he is fine to stay.  Meanwhile I call the nurses hot line and wait about 2 hours before they frickin call me back to just say the doc says due to the fever its just a rash from something viral he has and its in the diaper area bc its warmest there. Sounds bs to me! THey also say to give him some benedryl and not to worry about bringing him in unless he shows signs of not breathing.

Fri-Sunday he had no fever and we had given him some bendryl and it cleared it up...Well then on Sunday he woke up with the hives again all over his body.  THey dont bother him and he doesnt scratch them or anything but its just driving me nuts.  I have not given him any new foods etc.  I am so careful and I always wash all of his clothes sep in dreft and I dont change his soaps etc.    We had thought maybe it was the Tylenol causing it but he went days without having any and it still came back.

I thought maybe from the diapers?  Weve always used Pampers with no issues but I did try putting a Luvs one on last night that we had around the house to see if it did anything.  He woke up with a few hives but not as bad.  I really dont know if it is the diaper?  We had switched to the Pampers Cruisers type a while ago and I have read online some people having issues with them.

The only other new thing I can think of is we starting mixing bottles with formula (just the basic Enfamil type) half/half but he didnt have any issues for a while so I dont really think its that.

Its just so weird bc he'll have the hives and theyll start to go away and then it seems like after he lays down to go to bed or naps then he wakes up with some spots again..esp on his face. I just cant figure it out. Weve changed nothing in his bedding soaps etc and I dont use blankets or have any toys in his bed.

Anyone have any ideas or thoughts much appreciated! Otherwise I am just venting and needed to get this out. I just hope this goes away. I hate seeing him like this even though he is still happy as a clam.  I just dont know what else to do or try? My daycare lady says shes never seen anything like this and the doc doesnt have any answers other than oh its just viral and it will pass and when he gets warm is when the hives come out bc of that. UGH!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Is it yeast?  DD had a horrible diaper rash that looked like hives.  The Dr. said it was a yeast infection and that babies who have yeast infections maybe yeast prone.  She prescribed nystatin and even gave us a refill to have on hand to use as needed.

The other thought is eczema?  A friend thought her son had hives and it turned out to be eczema.  They just switched to unscented everything and use cetaphil lotion.

  • This is just me, but id get a second opinion. Either try a different pediatrician or even go to a dermatologist or an allergist. I break out in hives like it's my job. One thing that took forever to figure out was food dyes, reds in particular. One exposure didn't cause anything but a few times and hello hives. Dyes in medicine were a big one. If mom gave it to me once I was fine, 3 days in a row I had hives. I'm not taking chances with DS having my genes so I get dye free meds and I make all my own baby food to avoid any thing added.
  • Thanks! Yeah I havent used meds w dyes at all and use scented free everything except diapers..maybe I can try that for those?  I make all of his baby food as well. I know I had super sensitive skin as a baby so I have been so careful with all of his stuff.  The only last thing I can think of is the diaper but weird how hed never react until after 6 months old. Its worth a try?

Yeah I almost want to stick it out this week once his cold or whatever it is is gone and if hes still breaking out Ill go back in again.  The first time we went in it was just a family med doc that looked at it...his pediatrician was out of the office that week.  This last time I called and really wanted her to look at it but she reassured me and told me not to bring him in.

The first time my daycare lady swore it was just from the stress of all the shots.. but its weird how it stopped and then started up again a week later when he got the fever?!?!
  • Are you using unscented wipes as well? Lex breaks out from Pampers Baby Fresh (scent) wipes.

Other thoughts- and no judgement, just throwing it out there- but could bedbugs or other pests be causing the rash? I have no idea, but if it happens a lot when he's being put down to sleep maybe it's something on his sleep things.

Are you or the DC providers wearing strong perfume or lotion or hair products? Maybe he's allergic to that?

    Is he getting too hot?

I hope you figure it out soon- that's all I can think of for now. Good luck!

  • Thanks!

I dont think bedbugs I did wash everything his mattress protector etc.. I tried switching him to cotton jammies vs fleece and turning the temp down a couple degrees bc I thought the same thing but no such luck!

Yes I use the unscented sensitive type wipes.

I may try new diapers for a few days altogether and see if it helps?
  • Try some of the chlorine free diapers, maybe? Like 7th generation, babyganics, or honest co? More expensive but free of ALL additives so shouldn't cause a reaction if it is diaper related.

As an aside, I break out in hives every time I breast feed or pump. It is super annoying, and I have given up hoping anyone can find a solution. If it stays after I wean, I will freak.the.f.out.

  • My son had hives in all the warm spots of his body (under chin, back of legs, armpits) starting 1 week before his teeth broke through! Once the teeth were through it went away!

  • Thanks! Yeah Ive tried to look for clues like that too. It mostly happens after hes been laying down for the night or during naps..like he lays on his face or gets warm.  I keep thinking it has to be something in his crib but we dont put anything in his crib no blankets nothing..its almost like he just sweats or something?  Just so weird! It kind of appears in hot spots like face, armpits, diaper, back of legs in roll areas.  I m hoping it will just magically go away.
  • Could it be something at daycare, maybe they use something perfumey or maybe they have some type of bug?

  • @Bleachy14- I swore I had figured it out I thought it was the diapers-- I was using Pampers Cruisers..I switched to a diff kind for several nights and throughout the weekend and he had no hives at all.. but now the past couple of mornings hes had a few..mostly on his face and then they disappear even with the diff diapers so I have no idea.  I saw someone said their LO did this when they were teething?!?!  I think my Lo is teething..I can see white spots in his mouth.

The hives havent been half as bad when I use the diff diaper but I still think something else is causing it too. UGH. Its so frustrating!
