daycare teacher gifts

Since we have already talked about what to get our little ones, have any of you daycare moms thought about what to get your daycare teachers?  Wesley has two teachers that he has for the majority of the time, but what should I get them? Should I also get something for the teachers that are only with him for a few hours a week, or just focus on the teacher who are there for the majority of the time? What are you guys doing?

Re: daycare teacher gifts

  • I was thinking about this earlier and was considering just getting them Starbucks cards.  Henry goes to a center, though, and it's difficult to choose just a few teachers to receive gifts when I know they switch out a lot and band together to take care of all the kids.

  • I may also make mini Christmas tins of homemade cookies, bars, and Christmas candies for the teachers.  Or a larger one and just leave it in his daycare room.  I haven't decided if I'll have the energy for all that baking yet, though :)

  • I was thinking baking cookies and doing a gift card, are you going to get a gift card for all the teachers who take care of your kid or just the main teachers? I can think of at least 6 teachers as well.

  • I make a bunch of different kinds if cookies and I make plates for my girls teachers and the director and her assistant. They tell me they look forward to it every year so I guess it is a good gift. I also do this for mailman

  • We have 2 girls in daycare so between the two of them they've had 6 -8 teachers this year (they both moved up to older age groups part way through the year). I'm not sure what I'm getting them yet but it will likely be something homemade. In past years I've done cowboy cookie ingredients in mason jars, gingerbread in ceramic loaf pans, coffee or tea, and small gift cards. I'm thinking about baking pies this year. Gift cards or food seem to go over the best!

  • I think we tip them a couple hundred bucks?

Wait.... What? For how many people?
3 or 4...I will probably do $100 each for the teachers in his room and then a group gifts for the entire school as the teachers often flip flop.
I think this is pretty standard around here.

  • We have a sitter, not day care, but I'm getting her a pretty "heirloom" ornament for her tree and a 50$ gift card. Probably for a restaurant she likes.
I did just ask my coworker, who sends her son to a well liked day care around here, what she does, and she looked at me like I was nuts. "I pay them my whole salary, merry Christmas". She does give cards and homemade truffles, tho.
  • Daycare workers make like $8 an hour and I trust them with the life of my child.
    I pay like $22,000 a year for daycare...what's another $300?

I hear this, and I will definitely be getting daycare staff gifts, but that seemed like a lot of money to me, and we just don't have that kind of cash. Obviously, I think they are invaluable in terms of money because yes, I am trusting them with what is most precious to me. And they work hard and do a great job. But that doesn't mean I can afford to drop my entire Christmas gift budget on them. I have to but for 6 because she just changed rooms, so I was thinking more like $15/person except like $50 for her primary teacher. FWIW, I can't afford to spend more than $50 on any one person for Christmas and we usually come in around $500 total.
oh trust me I hear you. It's going to kill me too. I am trying to work overtime just to make up the money.
Though after reading that emily post link and getting in touch with some parents I think I am going to bring it down a bit.

  • Um usually 10 to 15 dollar gift card per teacher. Target home goods last year beauty brands was a hit. That is four for ds1. One for dd plus the bus driver. Maybe I am cheap. I do usually add a cute candle or bath item so I can package the gift in acute way. I am all about the presentation.
Hey I just met you, and you're my baby. This is your family, we're kind of crazy...Lilypie Kids Birthday tickersLilypie - (tl9S)Lilypie - (zrx8)imageimageimage

  • Nice of you to think of them. Don't forget a nice card thanking them/ appreciation for their service. When I was teaching I loved those.

Jesus, I don't even spend that much on my actual family members, and I even like some of those people...

I think that's pretty cool...I would worry (since I don't think that's standard here, but what do I know) that the daycare would frown upon me doing this for only a couple teachers.

I'm at a loss for what to do, because I really do want to give them good gifts.  I love my daycare, and they deserve something nice.  I know they only make minimum wage...

  • For DD2's 2 main teachers we'll get them a gift card, get the director a box of chocolates, and then bake cookies for all the infant care teachers.  For DD1, she has 5 main teachers, so all will get gift cards, as well as the director who is much more involved.

  • I have no idea what is normal in my area.  Do you think it will be bad to ask the director? I get along with her pretty well?
