  • I'm also 100% unpaid. Can use earned leave but after all these appointments, I'll have none left.

Me too, and I'm only paid 60% for those first 6 weeks.
Mine is a joke! The first 30 days I have to use PTO/ sick time if I have it ( If I don't it's unpaid) and then 50 percent the last two weeks of the 6 week period. I only have 3 weeks of sick pay currently.
  • Mine is totally unpaid leave. I do carry two short term disability insurances so at least some money will be coming in but as far as my employer is concerned, I get zilch.
  • Mine is unpaid too, but at least I have 8 weeks of accumulated sick leave I can take.  I feel for the rest of you ladies.

  • Signed! We get 12 weeks under FMLA, but our company doesn't pay for anything. Thankfully, I have STD that will cover me for 6-8 weeks @ 100%. I'll have 2 weeks of PTO saved up and then will be saving money to take another 4 weeks off for 12 wks total. I def want to keep working after having her, but I wish I could have more than 3 months.. 6 would be awesome. :-/

Me 3! Only unless I go out early, I will use up all my sick time, vacation days and remaining personal days. So I won't dip into the STD most likely. Then the 2nd 6 weeks will be unpaid. If i go out early, then I may some what dip into STD which is chum change..

  • @yenemous did you check into your policies? I looked around at a bunch and none covered maternity leave even when it included a c/s do we opted to not get them. Worth looking into to make sure you will get a benefit while you are out so you can plan accordingly.
  • So I think even more awful than the short period of maternity leave is the fact that it isn't called maternity leave, I have to file for disability!!! Since when did creating another human being become a disability? I can't believe feminist groups haven't jumped all over this. In England where my husband is from women get 6 months paid, husbands get 2. Makes me wonder why we settled here! Lol

I can take 16 weeks but unpaid. Luckily I will have about 14 weeks of leave banked (with additonal 80 hours reserved) and a short term disability plan so Ill come out ahead actually.

  • I am 100% unpaid...kind of. They force you to take any available paid time off while on your LOA. Seeing that we just get our vacation time on January 1, I'll be out of time off right away. I did make sure to schedule a vacation before my due date so I actually get some R&R next year...but I hope I don't have to miss work for anything else. Good thing children never get sick, right??? • I am semi lucky. I get 6 months all unpaid unless I use my vacation/personal/sick time, however I want to keep those just in case baby gets sick. We are saving up for it now... since I want to take my full amount now and will be running off of one income at that time.

  • I'm an employer and business owner and we don't pay for leave. It sucks but it's not possible to pay. Though any change wouldn't affect my small business. The only way longer would work is through govt subsidy and there is no way that is passing these days.

This may be true; however even a longer period of unpaid leave with a guarantee that you won't lose your job (or at least have something comparable to come back to) would be a plus. Even getting the government to at least discuss this intelligently - and I realize that's asking a lot these days - would be a big step in the right direction. You know, because they're all so concerned "family values" and all.

As an aside, not to hijack this thread... but I browsed through the other 'open' petitions on that website and some of them are a little disturbing.

I hear you. My husband owned a small business and is working on another one, and there is no possible way we could pay a worker for sick time or medical/maternity leave.  Paid leave is a wonderful benefit, but economics exist, and I see benefits such as this, vacation time, health insurance etc. as benefits not entitlements, and even more reason that one should strive for a college degree to be able to get a job that pays well and provides good benefits.

What you said about requiring a company to hold your job for you for more than 3 months is not totally out of the question, though as a small business owner, it could pose a hardship to go long periods not knowing whether someone is going to come back.. tough to plan and hire effectively.

I work at a large, well known media company, and I will have 6 weeks paid maternity/STD, and can take up to 6 more unpaid, or use vacation time.  I have 4 weeks of vacation time I will use, and then probably go back to work after 10 weeks.  I'm bummed to not take the full 12 weeks off, but I don't think we can afford to lose any paychecks.  I am fortunate, however, that my department is very flexible and I don't foresee being able to take days off the rest of the year despite having officially used up my vacation time.
