Crying in sleeping

LO "cries" or makes some sort of whining noise in his sleep about every hour from 3am on. I usually let it go if it doesn't sound like hysterics. When I do go in his eyes are closed. I usually don't pick him up but I did a few times and it seems like he gets startled. Anyone else experience this? What is it? It makes me feel bad for LO and I'm not sure if I'm supposed to pick him up and comfort him or let him ride it out because he still seems asleep.

TIA

  • Brayden does this wimpering type thing every so often.  I thought he was having nightmares but when I asked the pediatrician he went on to question me about the type of foods i'm feeding him.  He believed it was gas & told me not to feed him 4 hours before bed.

  • Same thing is happening to my LO.  It's happened while she is napping in my arms, and it also happens periodically in the middle of the night.  I am tempted to wake her up because they sound like baby nightmares and I don't want her to be upset.  But since she is STTN, I don't want to ruin a good thing and wake her up and worry about how to put her back down in the middle of the night.  I thought perhaps it could be related to teething....  ?  Not sure, and I don't have an answer but just here to say you are not alone.

I was feeding him bananas as his "dinner" so I stopped feeding him them in general because it gave him awful gas in addition to not feeding him solids after 6p.  So yes, it definetly worked but i'm not sure if it was the cutting bananas out or not feeding him after 6p that was the solution.

I was also wondering if it is teething related! Ohh babies, it's a new wonder every day!

  • My LO does this too... She also struggles to stay asleep sometimes during this time. If we have a really bad night it's normally from 3am on. Not really sure of the cause. I have read that the natural 'sleep chemical' their body makes lessens as it bears morning... I figured it was my LO fighting to stay asleep. It is sad though :( & we sleep in a dark room so besides the startle I never know of she is awake or asleep :(
