3rd Trimester

Mild preeclampsia!!

I'm 36 weeks and 5 days pregnant my OB told me today I have preeclampsia and said to stay off feet and prescribed me blood pressure medicine. I'm scared!!! Has anybody else been diagnosed with this? And how did things turn out??

Re: Mild preeclampsia!!

  • I haven't, but I've known a handful of women who've had mild preecclampsia (sort of, pre-preecclampsia).  More than likely you'll just be induced in a couple of weeks if your BP stays high.

  • When your induced can you have a normal vaginal birth?
  • I had it after being on bed rest for 5 weeks for a placenta abruption and preterm labor. When pre-e kicked into gear it was too toxic the day thy found out I had it so I had an emergency c-section but ds came at 37 weeks on the doc perfectly healthy and I was too. Just on blood pressure meds for a while and couldn't remember much of the first day or two thanks to the lovely drugs.

    Married: 5/09 ~ TTC Since: 10/10 ~ PCOS ~ Progesterone from 10/10 - 2/11 ~ HSG on 3/18 - Clear ~ Started Metformin 1000mg & Clomid 50mg 2/11 ~ Metformin upped to 1500mg 4/6 ~ 6/7 Now going to SG and put on Clomid, Ovidrel, Gonal F, Prometrium, Estrace ~ IUI #1 7/2 = BFP!!!!!! March 6th our little man was born.

    10/29/17 - Started process for IVF, got pregnant & miscarried a 2nd time since summer. 2/22 started stims - Menopur, Gonal F, Cetrotide - retrieval 3/6 - , PIO, estrace 3xday - FET 4/18 = Beta 1: 616; Beta 2: 1342 = BFP

  • I'm not spilling protein and my bp is holding steady, just slightly higher than my ob is comfortable with and I'm going to be induced around 38 weeks at the latest. 37 if I start spilling protein but my doc is totally on board for a vaginal delivery. Your chances of a c-section increase, but you can still totally go vaginal. The more dilated/effaced you are the better it will go. Or so I'm told at least
  • Yes, you can still have a vaginal delivery if you are induced.
  • I had high bp before pregnancy it has been controlled with meds but is now starting to rise slowly. I go three times a week for appointment's so it is very carefully watched.

  • I was induced with my first and had a quick, uncomplicated vaginal birth.  With my 2nd, my water broke but nothing happened, so I ended up with Pitocin for him too.  Again, quick (5 hour labor, 3 minutes of pushing) and uncomplicated.

  • If you aren't spilling protein, having headaches or vision issues it might not pre-e.

You could see a perinatologist before agreeing to be induced before 39 weeks.

1st pregnancy ended at 34 weeks witha  c-sect due to pre-e and IUGR.  He spent two weeks in nicu and was quite small but was at the 50% mark for H&W by 3rd birthday.  You are further along and no IUGR mentioned so your little one should be bigger and stronger right now, try not to stress over this.

  • Yeah I have a 2 protein blood pressure was 150/90
  • Did your doctor order a 24 hour urine collection?
  • Nope. Was he suppose to?
  • It is common to do a 24 hour collection for the lab to analyze.

I would ask him why he didn't do it.
perinatologist would likely ask for those results if deciding if the pregnancy should continue or not.

    How are you feeling?
  • Better a lot less swollen. He prescribed 200mg 2x a day labetalol when I take 2 nd dose it makes my eyes feel swollen. So I'm going to call him and ask to cut one in half. Thanks for asking :-)
  • I was diagnosed with it in my last pregnancy and am having symptoms again. I was induced at 36 weeks because of it. They should definitely have done a urine collection if it is truly pre-e, that tells them how bad it is. (I have had 3 so far in this pregnancy) I had weekly biophysical profiles leading up to the birth and for my final 24 hour urine collection I even had to stay and have it done in the hospital. They determined protein levels were too high after just 12 hours and started my induction. The only cure for pre-e is giving birth, giving blood pressure meds only mask one of the symptoms. I hope they are monitoring you much more closely than you are putting on. Pre-e is life threatening to you and you can still be affected by it after giving birth.

  • Wow! Your making me nervous.. Well I went in on Wednesday and told me to take care of myself and he wants to see me Monday. I too thought it was very serious I wondered why he didn't reschedule to see me next day.. 5 days is a long time! The last thing he told me if I vomit or have headaches or blurred vision to go to emergency room.
  • Went to OB and had 162/92 but no protein in pee?? Do I have pre-e?
  • No. Maybe chronic high bp or pregnancy induced hypertension. Here are so many factors that raise blood pressure.. Are you stressed? Have you had other high readings? What did your doctor say? If they were concerned they should and would take action.

  • Well he diagnosed me with mild pre-e last week but this week it was just my blood pressure no protein. Last visit was my first high reading.
  • Your doctor can't diagnose you on BP alone, the criteria for any degree of pre-e is high BP and the presence of protein in the urine.

The first time high blood pressure there was protein second time none. I guess it's something else. Protein doesn't just stop
  • It sounds like gestational hypertension, which can lead to Pre-e...did they do other labs other than check for protein? Did you do a 24 hour urine collection?
  • I was peeing a +4 in protein when I was diagnosed.

They did 3 24 hour collects.

    I was swollen EVERYWHERE- face/arms/fingers/feet

I was on hospital bed rest for 3 weeks before having DD (I had a c-section b/c she was breech)

Doesn't sound like you are there fully yet- you are having symptoms that could lead to pre-e.
  • Are you sure they didn't just tell you they were keeping an eye out for it.

  • No he showed me the results and said you have preeclampsia we need to get this baby out prescribed pills didn't do further testing just checks me every 4-5 days.
  • If he didn't do a 24 hour urine collection then there are not any results to look at. You don't just pull protein numbers out of the air.

  • You need to get a second opinion.
No need to deliver early at this point.

Is your due date near Thanksgiving?
  • My due date is December 6th. And he said my protein level was at a 2 sent me home went back 5 days later no protein just high blood pressure.
  • Before you let him take baby early demand a 24 hour urine collection and consult with a perinatologist.

    Keep resting and feeling well.

  • Thank you so much!
  • Tomorrow I find out wether I need to be induced after starting those BP pills at night after eating its 134/87 I hope that's low enough to keep baby cooking.
  • BP alone is not enough to diagnose Pre-e.
Tell him no induction till you get a second opinion or he does 24 hour collection.

This.. Peeing jn the little cup means nothing. They have to see your pee over a 24 hour period to make that call.

  • Yes at 35 weeks, it progressively got worse to full blown pre-e diagnosed through 24 hour urine sample. Was induced at 37 weeks 4 days. Had 33 hour labor mostly med free. Got to 10 baby never dropped. Had c section.
