Chair in nursery

We have an oversized chair in a spare room that could be easily go into a nursery. It'd be nice to use this instead of buying a rocker/glider but my mom insist you need a rocker for soothing the baby. Does it really make that big of a difference? I'd rather spend that money on something different. Any parents out there regret not buying a rocker/glider?

Re: Chair in nursery

  • I didn't have a rocker and didn't miss it. We had a love seat and it was great. I stood to rock her or just cuddled with her on my lap.

  • My kids liked to be bounced, so when they needed soothing, I would bounce up and down on an exercise ball. I do have a rocking chair that gets some use though.
  • We have a glider in her room and I do not think I sat in it once when she was a newborn, the reclining couch in the living room was much more comfortable.  Now it is nice to sit in there and rock while we read her good night story, but we would be just fine if it did not rock.  For our next kid I think I will get a recliner that will work in our living room so when we are done with it in the nursery we can still use it (we no longer have the reclining couch).

  • We didn't have the space or budget for a nice rocker, and I never could find an affordable one I liked, so we skipped one. I don't think having an actual rocker is necessary, but having a comfortable chair is essential. I'm using an old office chair right now and it's totally not comfortable, but it does the job in the middle of the night. We're at the point now where I think I'll wait until we move into a permanent house before redoing her "big girl" room and invest in a real chair for her room, but for the next baby? I'll get a nice chair for sure!

  • The nurses at the hospital discouraged me from rocking LO. We rearranged pre-existing furnature and love my reclining arm chairs. The recline / ability to put up feet comfortably has been far more important than rocking because we spent many niights & days together in the chair and putting feer up was a sanity keeper.

  • We have a rocking recliner in the nursery and I rarely rocked him. It was far more comfortable to put my feet up and recline the chair while holding him.
  • I bought a glider with a gliding footrest 4 years ago for DD. We use it every night still to this day to read bedtime stories. For us it was a great purchase and probably the only baby thing I still use regularly. I do agree that a lot of our time was spent in the recliner downstairs but it was nice to have a place to sit and rock since the bedroom was upstairs.

I would say if your bedrooms and living space is on a separate floor some type of seating is necessary.

  • When I had DS #1, we converted a guest bedroom to a nursery and just used the stationary chair that was already in there. We did buy an ottoman for it, and in retrospect, I think that was essential. We used the ottoman for so many things -- putting feet up, but also as a little "table" for the breast pump, etc.

This time around, I wanted a rocker/recliner, so we bought one, but we're also planning to bring the ottoman from DS #1's room into the new nursery for DS #2 (luckily, it's chocolate leather, so it goes with a variety of decor). I'm not sure if I'll like the rocker/glider as much as I anticipate, but I thought it would be more comfortable for me (I remember spending hours in that nursery chair) and that the baby might like to be rocked.
  • I have an ikea poang for my nursery. It bounces and works well for soothing. I do have to stand and rock sometimes too, so I think you can be fine with just a regular chair.

  • We have a reclining chair in our living room that we'll move into the nursery. We're going to buy a rocking/swivel mechanism and install it on the base. Simple inexpensive solution.
  • I never used my rocking chair in the nursery. I tried nursing LO thereonce but it was too uncomfortable. I much prefer sitting on my couch with MyBreastFriend. I imagine I can use it later to read to LO but any chair would work really. All of my friends that recently had a baby never used the rocking chair. I only have it because a friend have it to me. She got tired of it sitting unused in her nursery.
  • My LO loves the glider and I do too. We have a rocking recliner downstairs and it just doesn't work the same. Plus it's so comfortable!
