fairfax vs. california cryo

Our doctor recommended California cryo, but I'm also curious about Fairfax. Does anyone have advice or experience on which to go with?

Thanks!

Re: fairfax vs. california cryo

  • We used Fairfax and found them to have a great selection, easy ordering options, and great customer service. I'm currently 35 weeks with our first. They also have specials like if you buy 5 and don't get pregnant the 6th is free. Good luck!

  • Also just saw in another post the Fairfax is having a holiday special.
  • I used NW Cryobank.  Just had my second IUI and both times all the numbers looked good.  The staff there was very helpful over the phone but you can also do the entire process online.  Just another sperm bank to consider.

  • Hey @az1010 I can tell you that we had a HORRIBLE experience with California!  We are on our soon to be 7th IUI... Our first 2 donors were from California.  We ended up with HORRIBLE sperm counts and mobility.  So bad that our doctor won't recommend California anymore.  Our 1st donor was OK...but ran out.  Our 2nd donor who we were in love with on paper, turned out to only have a 19% mobility!  We were scared when getting our 2nd donor so we ordered 5 vials.  They would not refund/exchance/return since we had them all shipped to our doc. since we had already paid for shipping for the year.  Our doc. did try and fight them, but long story short, we got a 1 vial credit of $750 when we paid $750 for EACH of our 5 vials not including the shipping or charge for the higher membership to see pics and stuff.  So we felt like we threw away thousands of dollars.

Fairfax...our doc. HIGHLY recommends them and told us to go with them.  We were nervous because their web page is harder to navigate (in my opinion) and isn't as "flashy" as cali, but being on the east coast, it was WAYYYY cheaper!  :)

Our first attempted IUI with them we had a 80% mobility!  Wayyyy better than California!  Fairfax does run specials too.  :)  Right now they have 20-30% off!  They also give you your 6th vial free if you don't get preg. in 5.

    10 medicated IUI's (3 with injectables).
IUI #1 (medicated) Jan. 2013-BFP!!!!- Beta's didn't double, MTX shot for possible ectopic.
    8 IUI's between April 13-April 14 = BFN
IUI #10 and final before IVF, injectables May 2014- BFP!!!!  TWINS!!!!

7 week ultrasound showed 2 wonderful heartbeats!
8 weeks to the ER with vaginal bleeding while on vacations!  Diagnosed SubChorionic Hemorrhage.  Babies are both great.
9 week ultrasound showed both babies are still great.
  • Thanks so much everyone, really helpful.

AandStilltrying I'm really glad you told me about your experience. I was leaning towards buying 10 vials, but now I think if we DO go with this particular donor we should just get 1 or 2 to check the mobility before spending thousands of our savings. I'll also check out Fairfax first. I had the same exact feeling about the website being more difficult to use, but who cares if the selection or customer service is better.

  • We used Fairfax for our first 3 IUIs and found them to have a large selection and easy ordering.

We didn't get pregnant with any of those 3 vials, and so we ended up switching to NW Cryo for the next 3 that we purchased. The main reason for the switch was that we new we wanted to select a new donor anyway, and the prices at NW cryo were about 1/2 of what they were at Fairfax. The selection at NW Cryo is definitely less than Fairfax, but we still found a donor that we liked. The ordering process was also a little more complicated with NW, since we needed to have our Dr's office sign a release before they would ship the sperm to them, but all in all it was not a problem. Overall, 3 vials from NW were about $900 cheaper (with tax and shipping costs) than 3 vials from Fairfax. It was worth it to us, since we were paying for everything out of pocket.

We ended up moving to IVF after 5 failed IUIs and our last vial from NW got us 16 fertilized eggs, and we are now almost 11wks along after a successful fresh transfer. I would recommend both banks, but if price is really an issue for you, I would consider NW.
