Torticollis

One of my twins (bottom baby) was born with torticollis. We did physical therapy with him and he "graduated" but we still notice a slight tilt in his head that seems to get worse when he's tired. We mentioned this to his doctor at their 9 month appointment yesterday and he suggested a different physical therapist that would work closely with a specialist that could do surgery on his neck if need be. Obviously that freaked me out a little. Is there anything else that people have tried for torticollis. I was thinking maybe a chiropractor and we are going to continue the stretches PT told us to do but he's getting stronger and it's getting more and more difficult. I'm looking for more ideas as well.

Re: Torticollis

  • All we did was physical therapy when he was 2-3 months old. I'd keep trying the stretches, encourage him to look toward the weaker side, etc. I hope you are able to help him!

  • Although we were never diagnosed with it, they were monitoring DS3 for it.  I took him to the chiropractor and after several treatments you could never tell there was a problem.

  • I am a pediatric PT, it is completely normal for kids with torticollis to go through periods where they "relapse" especially during times of developmental growth. For kids I see I typically like to follow they for a year or when they start walking, even if it is only I once a month to check in and offer new suggestions. Good luck with your new PT, don't worry about surgery, in my five years of experience I have only known one kid to have surgery and he was two!
  • Thank you for the responses! It's nice to know that it sounds fairly normal for him to favor one side once in a while still.
