Success after IF

XP: Tell me all about injectables/IUI

I figured I may get some more responses here, since I know quite a few of you ladies of been through this. We are having to take a 5 month break, but will start injectables the first of June, with an IUI. Please give me all the details on this. I haven't really even begun researching because I am still in shock by the news.. It still hasn't sunk in yet. I don't know how many shots it is a day, how many days you do the shots, etc. And I must admit that I am TERRIFIED of needles.. All needles-- finger pricks, blood draws, etc.

Re: XP: Tell me all about injectables/IUI

  • I did one cycle of injectables and was successful so first of all....good luck! I was on Bravelle and DH gave me one injection each night for about 8 or 9 nights (I think). I would have to go to the RE in the morning (at least every couple of days) for blood draws. They would call me at night and let me know if I should increase, decrease or keep my medication dosage the same. Some mornings they would also do an u/s to check follie growth. When I was ready, DH gave me a trigger shot and I went in for IUI (triggered thursday night and iui on saturday morning). I had a couple of booster shots after IUI and then tested 14dpiui. I was terrified of DH giving me injections in my belly ( I HATE needles too). The first couple of times was traumatic for me, but it definitely got easier once I relaxed and he got a sense of how slow/fast to inject the medication so it did not burn as much. I also found that it was best for him to go into the bathroom and mix the medication and call me in at the last minute to give me the injection. The trigger was in the tush and much easier. I know some people give themselves injections, but I was not able to do that, ?I hope this helps.

  • Thanks for all of the information! I am just so nervous!
  • Try not to be too nervous.  You have 5 months before you'll need to take any action, so just try to be excited about the prospect that the shots might work :)  I'm terrified of needles, too -- pass out routinely (or used to) when I had my blood drawn.  The needle's so tiny, you really don't feel anything.  My husband iced the spot where he was going to do the injection, and literally, it was nothing.

Our first injectable cycle was successful, with steroids, trigger, and IUI.  I started on CD 3 with blood work and an ultrasound.  That night, we did our first injection (Gonal-F).  Shots every night for the next 7 or 8 nights, and then trigger, and then IUI.  Every two days, I went in for blood work and an ultrasound, just to make sure things were progressing the way they were supposed to.  Now, I'm 24 weeks pregnant with twins.  ALL OF IT was totally worth it!

     Good luck!!

  • Hey!

I was frightened at first too...  I started crying at my injection class, it was so overwhelming at first.  But after a little practice, it is really a piece of cake!!!  Really!!!  DH gave me my first few shots - and after that I built up the courage to do it myself.

I used follisim and repronex to get pregnant.  So, 2 shots a day. Everyone stims for different times.  You will be monitored by b/w and u/s quite a bit to check on follie growth.  I think I had my IUI on CD13... triggering on CD11.  So if I started stimming on CD3 that would be about a week of stimming.

I know its so overwhelming at first - but it gets to be easy!

    Best of luck!

  • It was way less scary than I thought!!

I got PG on my 2nd round of injectables. (First round was injectables + clomid). Round 2 was Gonal F for a week. I even did the shots myself!! They didn't hurt at all, and Gonal F was easy to use because the syringe had a knob on it that you would turn to get the specific amount you needed.

    Good luck!!?
