Real or Fake

I'm trying to decide if we should get a real or fake tree this year.  It's our first Christmas in our new home and I've never had a real tree.  But with DS and a crazy dog, I'm starting to think that having a real tree would be more of a hassle.  What are you getting real or fake?? Why???

Re: Real or Fake

  • We will do a fake just because I already have a cheap one.   The real ones are nice and smell nice but they are needy.   With LO and a cat it is just not worth it for us to get a real one.   We also have a small space for  a tree which is another reason I don't want a real one.   In the long run it is cheaper for us to have a fake one then purchase a real one each year (mind you we would most likely be purchasing one we could replant).

  • Fake, because we already have it. I love real trees, and I am looking forward to when Kate is old enough to go out and pick one out with us, like next year. I loved that part of Christmas when I was a kid. As it is, I am going to set up our tree in our bedroom, which is gated, because I know she will be trying to pull ornaments off constantly, and I don't even want to think about the horrors of an ornament hook in her mouth.
  • Fake. I'm allergic to every kind of tree. The last time we had a real tree my entire family got bronchitis, I got pneumonia, and we all got better almost overnight when we threw the tree out after Christmas. Worst month ever.
  • I would cry with a fake tree.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • Fake. I'd absolutely love a real tree, but that's one more damn thing for me to be responsible for. I just can't.
  • We always do real.
  • I have a fake tree that I put pine scented car fresheners in so it smells kind of real.

  • We use a real tree.  I kind of like going to the Christmas tree farms and picking one out.  Dh cuts it down and we bring it home.  I've even considered doing a live tree so I wouldn't have to mess with the needles; I'd only need to water it and then we could plant it after Christmas.

  • Real tree. What I don't know yet is if we will put it on the floor or put a shorter one on a table. We usually go for 10 ft trees so a shorter tree would be nice and easy but then we'd have to buy a special table. It will probably end up on the floor with a gate around it.

  • We do fake because we have really tall ceilings and like having a tall tree. It is easier to put together a really tall fake tree in parts rather than haul a real tree up 3 flights of stairs.

But if I had my choice, I would prefer a real tree.

Fake - we put it up early...like the week of Thanksgiving early...so we have to have fake :)

I also enjoy not having to re-string lights on it every year.
  • Fake, the one year I had a real one my male dog kept trying to pee on it. I don't want to relive that.
  • We will do a fake one. I always had real growing up and would prefer a real one still, but DH is allergic. I do still want to take the kids to a Christmas tree farm sometimes so they get that experience.

I am not sure how DS will do with the tree, so I am thinking we will put it up with no ornaments for a day or two to see before decorating it. I hope he does OK so we can leave it up. DD never messed with it, but DS is way more into things than she was at this age.

  • We do a Fake Tree. I talked my parents into getting a real one when I was in high school. It was the first year my sister brought her bf to Christmas and he had to spend most of the day on the porch outside he was sooo allergic to it. Since then we just stick to using our fake one.

  • We get a real tree every year. We put ginger ale or sprite in the water reservoir and the needles stay on much longer. Our kids have never messed around with it.

My family did this one year when I was a kid. My dad planted it in our front yard. When we sold the house it was bought by a real estate company that flips houses. I cried when I saw they got rid of our tree. They put a stupid little fake well in its place.
  • I can't imagine having a fake tree. I love the tradition of us searching for and cutting down our own Christmas tree. I'm not entirely sure how having any tree will last with DD, but we shall see!

  • I always grew up with real trees. Going to pick one out and cut down as a family was always so fun.

As an adult we have typically done a real tree upstairs in the luving room and a fake one downstairs in the family room. But this year since selling the house and moving we are in an apartment until April so we will be only doing the fake one due to space. I am super depressed about it. We will most likely go with my parents to cut theirs down though so we still get the family tradition out of it :)

  • Growing up we always had a fake tree. I prefer it over the maintenance of a real tree. DH's BIL sells trees during Christmas time so we might go that route. I would rather invest in a fake tree.

  • Fake. I have a brown thumb and would forget to water a real tree. And I don't want to worry about disposal after Christmas.
