Anyone else having Charlie horses?!

I just woke up with my third one tonight, yikes! Never had one before tonight and man they are painful, scared my SO to death lol! Anyone else having these, if so what are you doing to treat them?

Re: Anyone else having Charlie horses?!

  • I've had a few in the middle of the night when I'm trying to sleep but, they have stopped since eating a banana mid day and upping my water intake to a gallon a day.

  • Yup.. get them often. I drink plenty of water, eat bananas and get walk regularly. I notice they come more often when I am over tired.

Agree with PP - try to up your water intake. I hate bananas but since I've started drinking a ton more water I haven't had any leg cramps.

  • I was getting them in my sleep pretty regularly around 20 weeks, and had one again a few nights ago. Definitely happens for me when I don't hydrate enough. Trying the bananas too, but I'm not consistent with that. The water has helped me for sure though.

  • I echo the recommendations for more water and banana, and would like to add that a magnesium supplement (my doctor recommended 500-600 mg/day) helps with Charlie horses AND constipation. I had huge issues with both in my first pregnancy and NONE this time around since I started taking magnesium.

  • I was getting them I'm the middle of the night too. For immediate relief I wake up DH and he pulls my foot into a flex (lay on your back and point your toes to the ceiling) and hold the position tight. If it doesn't alleviate the pain, pull a little more towards you and hold. Usually works pretty fast.

  • Agreeing with drinking lots of water.  Also, its counter intuitive, but standing up really helps- possibly for the same reason stretching/flexing works.  As soon as I stand it is instantly gone.

HOMG YES. I've had one or two mild ones -  my first ones ever - since getting pregnant, but last night took the cake. I sat bolt upright from a dead sleep, couldn't catch my breath, and leapt out of bed, hopping around on one foot and swearing, trying to rub my right calf! Holy crap, that was painful. I had heard about flexing your foot - pushing your heel out and pointing your toes up towards your knee - and that helped to calm it (eventually) but holy moly. My cats are so afraid of me now, lol
  • They are the worst!! I do some stretches before bed and that helps, along w bananas and water. I had a terrible one a few weeks ago and was sore for several days!
I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!

  • Yes!!! Charlie horses and Braxton hicks!!! And when one hits somehow DS is always around so I gotta hold it in so he's not scared or thinking he's in trouble....I'll usually just look away and cringe but good gravy they are not pleasant!!! and they both hit so suddenly that a groan/moan just pops out with it and freaks out DH time to time lol
  • I get them in the middle of the night. The second I feel it I point my toes down. All gone.

Middle of the night too - or when stretching...but I find pointing my toes up works better for me!

  • Yep, they sure are painful. I get out of bed and stand up as soon as I feel it coming on and it takes care of it right away. Sometimes the cramp is so bad I can't flex my foot so this works better for me. Stretching before bed and increased water intake during the day helps for me.

  • Thankful I'm not the only one! All of the responses about intake of water makes perfect sense considering I've been lacking on my fluid intake the past week or so! Thanks for all the responses girls, hopefully I won't have any tonight!
