March 2014 Moms

Anyonoe know of a job you can do part time from home?

So as it's getting closer i'm starting to stress out a little bit. I'm a single mom and i've posted about the baby's dad before and I really would rather just do it by myself than have to have him help me with anything especially since so far he's stayed away. It's made a huge difference in my happiness and stress and I really don't want to press him for Child Support and that be the reason he comes back around. I have a great job and i've lived comfortable for a while but i'm worried about extra insurance and daycare that it'll get tight. Does anyone know of anything that you can do from home like in the evenings for some extra money? You always see stuff but I never know if it's for real or not. Im probably just stressing because between paying the doctors and it being the holiday it's just a crazy time! Thanks in advance!

  • You could do the parties. Friends of mine sell premier jewelry and they make more doing that than in their normal jobs. They both average $500 per party. So that is $500 for a two hour show on one night! If I didn't know so many who already sold it I would definitely think about getting into it. It's great money and relatively low hours that you schedule yourself. You could also contact local universities. A lot of times they need people to do data entry for their research studies and it is work you do from home.

  • like PP have said, do parties.
Thirty-one is a great company and people respond well around my area to it.
It Works, if you want some health products, in fact if you are interested in that PM me.
Avon, Mary-Kay if you want make-up

there are a lot of options in that arena.

  • I work for a search engine evaluation company from home right now. There are a few- Lionbridge, Leapforce, and Appen Butler Hill. It's mildly technical, but you basically rate the quality of search results.

They want college grads I think, and the work can be pretty spotty, but you can do it from home and it's fairly menial. I manage to bring in $200-300 extra bucks a month and it really helps us out. Bonus- you don't have to deal with people or telephone calls like most work from home jobs.

My sister works for leapforce and likes it. She only does a few hours each week but it helps her income since she is a stay at home mom. I think it's $13 an hour.

The problem with the hosting parties for those companies is there is an upfront cost at buying some of the products. I sold Lia Sophia Jewelry for a while and you had to buy the start up bundle which was $200.

  • Thanks for all the options! I have my masters degree and am a CPA and could do taxes from home but the busy time will be right when the baby comes this year so I'd like to find something not so pressing right at that time, next year it'll be a different story! I'll look into all the things you suggested. I'm not good at selling things, I wish I was but i'm a quite person. I could always leave my job and find someone else but I love that I work where my son goes to school and get all the same holidays as him, that's why I was considering something just from home so I don't have to give any of that up. You girls are the best!
  • I second the Etsy idea if you've got a creative side. I'm with you on the parties...I'm outgoing with people I know...and sometimes with strangers but I'm generally shy. I wouldn't do well in those jobs. Lol.

I'm thinking about opening an etsy shop...with the hopes that along with photography I can eventually stop working my full time job (I'm an RN).

    Good luck to you!!

Oh!! I agree with a PP...at least look into the child support. I know it opens the door for them wanting to see LO, but if he doesn't seem to be interested in that at all, he should still pay. Good luck.

  • If you ever have to get state help in the future (I have my MBA and securities license--never ever thought it'd happen to me...my dad went on hospice and so I took him in. My husband stays home to take care of him!), they will go after him for support and back support. Just a heads up:)

  • My mom says she will help but gosh I just don't want her to have to do that. I don't even know if he will pay at all. Basically he's staying away now because I told him that I had no more information to share about the baby until he was willing to help me pay the doctors office, (i'm having to pay 600 a month for 6 months and then my stinking deductible will start over in Jan) and he hasn't sent a penny or tried contacting me since August. Of course if he tries to come around i'll def make him pay but I kinda like the whole out of sight outta mind thing for now. I guess time will tell how things will go!! I wish I knew how to make newborn hats and stuff to sell for newborn photography props. My best friend is a photographer and buys stuff like that all the time and I know there is a big market for that on Etsy. Maybe i'll start practicing!!
  • I'm a CPA too, and I do a small bookkeeping gig on the side. They are pretty flexible with the hours I work. Occasionally I have to make a call or two during business hours, but I do that on my lunch. Works out great for me.

Don't do Avon. I actually ended up LOSING money by selling Avon. I had problems on each and every invoice that they sent me, which they never reconciled, so it came out of MY pocket!!!!

I have heard great things about Mary Kay though.

  • Good idea, I'll have to see if I can find someone that needs book keeping help. A small business would be great. I live in Texas where we are in  a huge oil boom so it's crazy out here with stuff i'll start asking around!
  • if you're crafty i highly reccomend an etsy shop! I've had great success with mine. I pay for groceries and any other small things I want for me or the kids just from etsy income. DH pays all the big bills of course, but the little extra is really nice!

  • Do bookkeeping! It is flexible and you can go it from home. I have my own solo law practice and a bookkeeper is the only person I have hired - though it's just for dealing with quarterly taxes for bow. She also does my taxes. Find just a few clients to start with and after the baby you can build up your business.

So I know this line of discussion isn't what you asked about, but Child Support isn't something he pays in exchange for time with his child.  Child Support is something he has a legal obligation to pay for his child.   With or without a CS order, you cannot legally keep him from seeing his child (for that you need a custody agreement) and whether or not he sees his child is irrelevant to his obligation once a CS order is in place.

I really don't have words strong enough to encourage you to consult an attorney.  There are many free or low cost resources out there for single moms-to-be.  Assuming you are in the US, calling 211 (United Way) would be a good place to start.

Ok so I'm also really interested in an etsy shop. Got any advice?

And OP I'm so sorry you're in that situation. I was in a similar situation when I had my first child and it sucked. My ex never paid child support even tho he was supposed to. I chose the outta sight outta mind thing too, which seemed the best thing to do at the time (any access would have had to have been supervised and he didn't turn up the third and fourth time I took my baby so I decided I wasn't going to make the effort if he was going to let her down- not that she knew she was just a baby) but it backfired on me as my child then idolised her father even tho he was actually scum, because I never bad mouthed him and she didn't know him. My point is, at some point baby will grow up and probably want their dad. It sucks. I feel for you. Sorry to be a pain in the butt, I know you weren't asking for advice on this.
  • Someone above mentioned selling Premier Designs jewelry.  I sell Premier and it has been a lifesaver.  It's something I can do mostly from home with the exception of the actual home show.  I would be happy to get you some information if you think you may be curious.  It has helped me become completely credit card debt free.  Let me know if you would like more information and I can get some for you.

  • Swim lessons but you need a pool. You can work from home and make your own schedule.
