NWMR: need vacuum recommendations

I would love to finally buy a good quality vacuum. We have a roomba which is nice but I have to pickup all of the kids toys so I can't just schedule it to run everyday like I used to. We also have a small cheap vacuum. I want something that's powerful enough to handle dog hair (we have a lab), works well on both wood and carpet, and is minimal maintenance. I hate how often I have to clean the stupid filter on my current vacuum. I am willing to spend the money to get good quality, just need to decide what I want.

  • Dyson. No question. I went through vacuums quickly unable to find one that would last more than a few months. I have now had my dyspn for 5 years and it works as good today as it did day one. Well worth the investment. I can't say enough about it! I know several people who also have dyspn sand feel the same way I do. I love it as much as you can love a vacuum lol

  • We love our Dyson. The only thing I don't like is that we bought it when we were in a 1 bedroom apartment, so we didn't get a full size one. Now that we're in a 4 bedroom house, it's annoying to have to empty the chamber so often and that the cord isn't long enough to make it down the hallway.

  • Does Dyson have filters that need to be cleaned or replaced?

  • Get the Dyson DC41 upright. We have 2 cats and a lab. It is pricey but awesome!

  • DYSON!  :D They are so worth the $$$ in my opinion. I absolutely love mine and have had it for years and it still works fabulously!

Every vacuum is going to have filters that need to be cleaned or replaced. Otherwise hair and particles would get sucked up into the motor, and your vacuum would quickly become an expensive piece of artwork.

  • I have and love the Dyson animal.  You do need to clean the filters, but it's fast and easy to do so.

Thanks that's the feedback I was hoping for!

  • We are in the middle of updating our den, including replacing the carpet. Interestingly, the carpet we went with (super soil and stain resistant) has a warning from the manufacturer not to use Dyson on it. They said it can burn the tips of the carpet unless you make sure it's raised up so air can circulate under it. We have a Shark. It's good, but the cord is sort of short. We wanted to get a Dyson. Still might!

I'll be the rebel - we have a Shark and it is the best vacuum I've ever had. My sister had a Dyson and I used it a few times but didn't see a difference.

    Here's the one we have:

    Us too. I love it!

  • I concur with everyone else, Dyson!  I've had mine since 2005 and it's still running strong; no issues. Totally worth the investment!

  • Love our Dyson animal (we have a german shephard - major shedding going on in our house). My only complaint is that I wish the cord were longer. I just keep an extension cord attached to it permanently though - easy fix.
  • We have a dyson ball - and have two high-shedding dogs (rottie and a golden).  I have to be careful about cleaning the brushes every so often, but it really gets the job done.

  • I have the Dyson Animal DC28 and I hate that freaking vacuum.  It works okay - picks up hair, filters aren't too hard to clean, etc.  I bought it brand new and had to take it to the repair shop (still under warranty luckily) 4 damn times in the first 3 months.  The band and the beater bar both broke multiple times.  I have mostly wood floors with just two area rugs so it's not like I was trying to pick up quarters out of shag carpet or something.  I know lots of people love their Dysons but I will never buy another one.

  • I just went through this process. I tried the Dyson 41, Shark Pro Navigator Lift Away, and Miele Twist. I wasn't a big fan of the Dyson--I didn't like the ball motion, it fell over easily, you can't adjust the suction, and it felt kind of cheap for the price. I liked the Shark, but the head was kind of small, which made it hard to clean large areas. I'd recommend it though if you're on a budget (use coupons at kohl's for a great deal!). It feels cheaper than the Miele, but for 1/4 the cost of the Dyson, that's okay. It also fell over easily. I ended up getting the Miele Twist. It's bagged, but I've been using the bag for about a month now, and it's not close to full (we have two dogs and a toddler). I ordered a charcoal filter for it that should last a year.

  • I was going to say get a Dyson Animal, but apparently everyone has beat me to it. Dysons are the best.

  • We have a Dyson Animal and I would NOT buy this brand again.

The clutch something or other broke which was an $80 part.  Fortunately DH is handy and was able to replace it, otherwise it would have been more cost for labor.  I could have practically bought another quality vacuum for that price through Sams Club.

It also chews up carpets.  It is mediocre on hard floors.

I would definitely buy a windtunnel style vacuum again, but I'd search consumer reports to see what they recommend.

  • After following this thread, I bought the Shark Navigator and it arrived yesterday. I cant believe the ridiculous amount of stuff it sucked up -yuck! I didn't want to spend a ton of money because our cleaning person does most of the vacuuming with her own vacuum. So I'm very happy with the purchase. But I wonder if I should ask our cleaner to use the new vacuum...

Our cleaning lady prefers to use her own vacuum.  I wouldn't care if she used our Dyson.  Hers was $100 and she loves it, she thinks it does a great job, and can't fathom why we spent so much on a Dyson.

You are going to be using your own vacuum anyway...so why not let her put the wear on her own?

Bottom line: I'd give her the option and leave the decision up to her.

Good point! It was just I realized her vacuum isn't really doing an awesome job considering how much stuff I vacuumed up today. But some dirt is good for kids, right?
