Giving water to baby?

My son is 5 weeks old. He was 7 lbs at birth and weighed in at 11 lbs today at the pediatrician. He is ff and eats 2-3 oz every 2 hours. The dr said to give him 1 oz of water between feedings to try and stretch him to every 3-4 hours.

I've read conflicting info about giving them water this young. Anyone else done given their lo water? I want to trust my pediatrician, just looking for others experience.

Re: Giving water to baby?

  • is baby demanding feeding that frequently? I have read that baby cannot process water at this age, and it shouldn't be given under a year.

  • My pediatrician said NO water...

  • Yes, he is demanding being fed that often.
  • I don't know what procedure (?!) is with formula but could you increase the amount you are offering him? I wouldn't give water. Nor cereal in bottle lol
  • My dd is almost 7 weeks and probably weighs 9 pounds. She was 5 pounds 4 ounces when she was born. She was eating 4 ounces at every feeding for a few days, but is back down to 2-3 ounces every 2-3 hours. I always offer 4 ozs. I dont think offering more would make your ds drink more and stay asleep longer or request to be fed less often. I wouldn't offer water yet since I've read they can't process it until about 6 months.

  • I'd just increase his bottle. We feed our little boy 3-4 oz every 3-4 hours or so. I start with 3 and if he is still hungry we give him another oz.

  • Yea why not just increase the amount of formula. Water doesn't have any nutrients I don't see why you'd try to keep LO full with water until next feeding.

  • Thank u all for your responses. The pedi is concerned that he is gaining weight too fast. I'm gonna hold off on the water and see if I can hold him off until 3 hours. But, If he's screaming for food, I'm gonna feed the kid!
  • Well I hope he stretches it out so you can get some rest, I know it's exhausting with baby feeding that frequently!! I know little about weight gain expectations but I don't think his weight gain sounds unreasonable.
  • How old ka your pedi? Pretty sure that's an old school thing to do.

He's prob around 55. He comes highly recommended by multiple people, but I disagree with giving the baby water.

  • Yeah. No water.

I was just about to ask the same thing!

  • From what I've heard you really can't over feed a baby, if he's hungry let him eat. He's just on a faster growth trend then some.

  • Sorry if this sounds stupid, but are you sure he is crying because he's hungry? The boob can always sooth DS, but it's not always because he's hungry. I've been working on finding other ways to sooth him when he's tired so he doesn't always need a boob.

I know it's different with formula feeding, but just a thought.

And no, I would not give DS water.

Married my love 8-25-12 TTC #1 September 2012. BFP 2-2-13. DS born 10-16-13.

  • I would not give water.

Doesn't sound stupid at all. I've gotten him to go 3 hours twice today. Maybe I'm reading him wrong. I'm gonna see what I can do to eliminate all options before feeding him...

I swear there is no rhyme or reason. We are all just gonna figure it out as we go.
  • No water. That hasn't been used by pediatric guidelines in decades. If he's hungry, then he eats. He may gain weight, but no baby should be on a diet. He is asking for what he needs. It will level out.

I think this is old school too because my grandmother who is a retired nurse suggested this as well. I just nodded and went on. Ha ha! I wonder if you should increase too because my LO is 12 days old and bf as well as eats 2 -3 oz every two to three hours. Granted he weighed 8 lbs 10 oz when born. At his one week check up he weighed 9 lbs 5 oz.

    Edit: typo

  • My mom is also a retired nurse and suggested that I give LO water. I think its what they did back then. I just give him formula, don't think water will do much to reduce his appetite.
