Blanket in crib

This is the first winter that we've had a baby in the nursery.  When we put the heat on, since the nursery is the smallest room, it heats up crazy fast..like 10 degrees or more in 15 minutes! So, we are having a hard time regulating the temperature in her room.

We've thought about keeping her door open, but I think that'll affect her sleeping big time..maybe getting her a space heater just for her room, but then I worry about the fire hazard..

So we are going to try a blanket which we haven't done before.  I am pretty sure at this point, there's no real safety risk with that, but I wonder if DD will really know how to use it.  She does grab her blankets during play time sometimes and lay them over her, so she seems to know what they are for, but I think she may end up just throwing it over her crib rail like she does with her toys.

We'll try and see, but curious what your experiences have been?

Re: Blanket in crib

  • I'd maybe suggest warm jammies and then a sleep sack of some sort. DD just turned four and she's barely figured out the blanket in the last 6 months. I just don't think they know how to keep it on and if they wake up cold they haven't gotten, in my experience, the slightest idea how to put it back on them.

I agree with this.  Our 3 year old rarely pulls his blanket over himself in the middle of the night.

That said, we're using a blanket with DS2, tucking him in it when we leave the room.  Once he turns out of the blanket, he doesn't know how to cover himself up, but he also doesn't seem super cold in the morning either, so it seems to be good enough.  He usually sleeps in fleece footed PJs.

  • My son has pretty much always had a blanket but no he does not know what to do with it.  If he scoots himself out from under it he wakes up because he is cold.  You could give it a try and see how it goes though.

  • We've been using blankets for a few months now and never had a problem. We've used swaddling and receiving blankets, and recently switched to knitted afghan blanket for winter. He knows to pull it off his face, and I've often seen him covered up or snuggling with it, so I know he understands it keeps him warm. If he wants to throw it out, then that's his problem.

  • I would also suggest footie pajamas. We also recently got a flannel crib sheet and a jersey crib sheet to try. Last year we would warm up the sheet with a heating pad, but we want to forego that this year. The flannel and jersey don't seem as cool to the touch as regular sheets when we put him down at night, and if they're anything like the flannel sheets I've personally had growing up they will be nice and cozy at night for him. So far so good!

  • I've experimented with a blanket during naptimes to see if she'll use it--for the most part, it ends up wadded up under her, lol.  So I'm not sure if that means she doesn't get it, or if she doesn't need it and is getting it out of the way.  In either case, I'm not worried about her getting it stuck over her face or anything.

I am cautious on knitted stuff, though--even though they're older, I think they can still get a finger caught in the yarn.  And though she would definitely wake and "let me know" lol if it hurt, it's something I'd rather not deal with.

  • DS has been using a blanket in his crib since around 7 months. He also sleeps in fleece, footie PJ's. I think each LO is different so go with your gut. DS's room is very cold even with the heat up. He also keep his door half open to help with the flow. So far so good! We won't be getting a space heater. We thought about it but I had visions of it bursting into flames so that was a no go for us!

  • We use sleep sacks. My 3 year old doesn't stay covered up.

  • We have a cold house, and DD seems to need it pretty warm to sleep thru the night. She has a space heater in her room, sleeps in a sleep sack and has a blanket as well. I don't know how we are going to deal with the temprature next year when she will likely be sleeping in a bed.

  • We give DD a blanket, but if I check on her before I got to bed, it's usually not over her anymore. We also have a space heater in her room though, so there's that.

  • Dexter can pull the blanket over himself when he wants it already, and he will pull it up to the side of his face to rub his cheeks with it for comfort. He's always had a love for extra soft blankies to do this with. In the middle of the night he will grab the corner of the blanket and roll over to his belly, dragging the blanket over his back. Lol, it's pretty cute. My 2 year old wraps herself in a cocoon every night and likes to be tucked in tight.  Our house is old and the temps arent balanced well so I keep them in long sleeve jammies with socks, or footed jammies in the winter in case their blanket slip off of them.  They have always watched how we tuck them in and they just started doing it themselves as time went by.  DH and I rarely sleep all the way through the night and I don't go to bed till midnight so I always walk in the nursery and cover the babies up one last time before I go to sleep.
I leave the door open for their nursery to get some extra heat, but you are right, it can affect their already set sleep routine.  To keep them normal we just shut all the lights off in that part of the house.  My kids need dark to sleep so this just makes it easier for them.
    Good luck!  :)

  • I don't like space heaters.  They are a major fire hazard and I just don't trust using them.  My daughter sleeps in the fuzzy footy pajamas and she stays warm throughout the night.  She flops around in her crib so much that I wouldn't even consider putting a blanket in there.  If I needed her to stay a little bit warmer I would just put her in her pajamas and a sleep sack.

  • We're just using carter's fleece footie pajamas.  There is a blanket in her crib, but it only stays on her if she falls asleep immediately, and even then, it tends to get thrown off when she moves around in the night.

It's getting really chilly at night, so I just bought two of these. He will not keep a blanket on and also flips out if he can't walk easily in the crib because of a regular sleep sack. They were $25 at BRU online, so I got two to put me over the minimum for free shipping.

I put him in a onsie, footie PJs and a sleep sack.

  • Uh...this entire thread makes me feel AWFUL. DS sleeps in pajama sets, often without socks. I cover him with a blanket when putting him down, but he kicks it off. When he transitions to my bed in the MOTN, I sometimes will put a blanket over him but he immediately throws/kicks it off. This makes me nervous that I'm freezing me kid out! Perhaps he's extremely hot-natured!

Don't feel awful!  Sounds like he's just hot-natured.  My oldest is like this.  He sleeps in underwear in the dead of winter.  I'm like "child you will freeze" and usually coerce him to put pajamas on.  He always wakes up in boxer briefs and uncovered no matter what.  *sigh*

  • I should add, DD is a GREAT sleeper..she sleeps 12-13 hours through the night, almost never wakes up in the middle.  I just feel bad when her monitor shows that it's only 66 in her room.  I also used fleece footed pjs.  Maybe that's enough..
    Thanks!

We're in the same situation, but we do bedshare all night.  I'm thinking about getting what @MississippiCatfish mentioned to see if she'd like it.  I also think I'll start putting socks on her.  I don't like footie pjs, because she's so tall, she outgrows them quickly.

This. I was hesitant to get a space heater too, so we got an electric one with a thermostat so it turns itself off when it reaches the temp we program. Very different than an old school space heater where you see the flames.

DD has been sleeping with a blanket since she was around 8 months.  Even though it is never covering her in the morning, I think she still uses it.  We turn our thermostat down to 59 at night plus we live in upstate NY so it gets pretty chilly at night.  I make sure that DD wears footie pjs with socks and a onesie underneath, PLUS she has a space heater in the room.  Each morning when I get DD out of bed I feel her hands to make sure they aren't chilly and so far she has been nice and toasty.  Back to the space heater, we set it pretty low so it will heat up to a given temperature and then turn off.  It will only turn back on when the temp dips below a certain amount.  It doesn't show the actual temperature on it, but it has 2 fan settings and a dial to increase the temperature.  We keep the dial at the third little mark.  We got it on amazon and love it.

  • Usually footie pjs but she wraps herself in her small blanket as well. She never acts cold, but the temperature is easily 5 degree colder than our room. And can't believe you will have two soon. Ahhhhhhhh.

  • I put DD in footie pajamas and a sleep sack. Any loose blankets she intentionally kicks off. She still wakes up with chilly hands though. :(
